    long range scopes for beginners

I know this is a scope question, but I hope it's allowed to stay here because there are a lot of long range shooters in this forum.

My question is MOA vs MRAD. It seems like most long range shooters like MRAD, but there's a scope I like that's only available at the price I like in MOA. Both reticle and turrets are MOA. It has a Christmas tree type reticle.

Does it matter much for a beginner, or is it sort of a yards vs feet type of distinction?

Unless, you are shooting PRS competition, MOA is just as good as Mil and vice versa. In fact, there are some shooters who use MOA.

They are both great systems. You just need to make sure your shooting buddies are on the same page. Just because it's a lot easier to communicate among each other.

I'm getting rid of my MIL scopes. If oyu compete or have friends that use MIL then stick with it.

MOA is just so much easier to process for me.

      1moa =1" per 100 yards.

      A 4" group at 1200 yards in 1/3moa.

I can do that in my head. No way I can do that in MIL.

      I cut wood in fractions.

      I measure food in fractions.

      I ship boxes in fractions.

As long as the turrets and reticle match it doesn't really matter. I use MOA on all my scopes, because that what I know.

Correct, make sure the match. I started MOA, but as time went on, I found MIL/MIL easier for me.

If you are going to use the reticle for ranging, the math is a little easier to do in your head when using MILs. On the other hand, the adjustments are a little finer if the turrets are MOA. But as others have said, doesn't really matter as long as turrets match reticle.

Most LR shooters I encounter shoot MIL. In my group we all shoot MIL as well. Use what people around you shoot so you all speak the same language.

I think David Tubbs new scope isn't in MOA or MIL.
I think its in MPH or miles per hour if I heard him right?
The way he explained it is 5 mph never changes with distance but I might have misheard.

I hope to shoot PRS-ish in the future. Why is MIL better?

That's easy - I got no long range shooting buddies. Nobody I know has the least bit of interest in it.

Well, like I said, the one I'm looking at is MOA.

Its just what most of the shooters use. So you'll be speaking the same value when others are calling shots for you.

You can drive 3 hours up north and shoot with me lol.

                        long range scopes for beginners

MOA vs Mrad and I guess the more important thing is first focal plane.

Then turret tracking > glasses. Just my 2 cents

It is funny when someone asks "How many Mils is each ring?" All they get is a bunch of confused looks and shrugged shoulders....They are a half MOA each, we don't know what "Mils" are.
