Bolted-on scope bases don't really do anything for rigidity unless they are also pinned into place.

Look at the picture again, it's a solid top action. The scope base is just there to mount a scope on.

Right after I posted about the stock I gave "Dangerous" Bob Dorton a call and he said your buddy that moved out of state had one.
As I was talking to him you posted and Bob said to say hello.
He said the fit and finish on them is pretty nice.
What I am really looking for is a huge heavygun stock like a Gary Alvey on steroids. I am putting together a case slightly larger than a 50 Williams on a 2.5 inch BAT with a 42 inch fast twist barrel. Gonna give 2 miles + a try.

The action contorts under the scope.
The scope mounts move around on the receiver as this happens.
It's worst in open top recievers like a Mauser98, 1903 or any receiver that does not have a top bridge between the front and rear.
This includes a standard 700, model 70 or a Howa 1500 action.



The strongest actions have a closed top and bottom and will not contort as much.
This is your Bat actions as well as Surgeon or Defiance actions with the one piece scope base and recoil lug.

Makes perfect sense. Some Savages also have open tops. For the very reason you described, I did build a Savage using their Precision Target Action (single shot), which only has a cut out for loading and unloading and no opening for a mag. I figured that would resist bending or contorting as much as anything for something in that price range.

Both the Remington and Howa are "open tops, but in cross section, they are obviously different, with one having a round bottom and separate recoil lug vs a flat bottom and integral recoil lug. The Howa has a longer distance between action screws, which might allow it to twist more (???), but on the other hand has a thick rear tang vs the 700.

In your opinion, what is the strongest factory action out there when it comes to resistance to flex and distortion? I sometimes wonder about that when we hang a beefy barrel off the end of the action.

Anything with a solid bottom, a solid top and a single small loading/ejection port on the side.
The bigger the diameter, the stronger it is.
The Remington 783, Stevens 200 or a Ruger American are stronger than a Tikka T3 as the Tikka T3 action is very small in cross section.
Solid top repeaters are better than open top repeaters.
