    Scoping a Winchester .30-30 Ranger

I have a Winchester .30-30 Ranger that I bought some years ago. I'd like to scope it. The receiver is factory drilled & tapped for a scope mount, so I ordered what I thought was a correct one (box is pictured below) and put it on the rifle.

Unfortunately, it would appear it is not made for this rifle; the front of the receiver seems to be taller than what the mount was designed for. The pictures show that the mount is not parallel to the axis of the barrel, but rather is tilted up, as viewed from the butt of the rifle.

Is there a way to salvage this mount? Maybe a couple of spacers of some kind at the back? Or is there a mount which would work with this rifle? I've searched, found nothing that I'm certain would be right, and I can't afford to throw money at it.

Sure doesn't look right. Maybe the wrong mount in the box?? I have some new Weaver bases for the angle eject. PM if you would like one.

Does Redfield put a number on the mount itself? Is the geometry of the Winchester receiver the same on the Ranger and the AE?

Agree with kendog, doesn't look right. Kendog has made a very nice offer, and he knows a thing or two on these rifles. Should be an easy fix.

Turn the rifle upside down and use it for long range shooting.

I thought that too. at first, but the clearance for the port is on the proper side and the "R" logo is right side up.

I just realized, apparently the receiver geometry was changed at some point. There appears to be at least two mounts with the same part number.

I've got a ranger that's newer than yours. How much are you in to that mount? If it will fit mine I may buy it from you so you can buy the correct one for yours.

...although, I don't believe mine is drilled and tapped now that I think about it, and I don't want to drill it.

My files show a different numbers for a "94 Big Bore Angle Eject", and a "94 Angle Eject except earliest". The difference being the front mount. A 403 for the Big Bore, and a 94 for the other. Both take a 95 rear

I have several Weaver 2 piece sets that consists of a 94M front, and a 95M rear base, designated for the "94 Angle Eject except earliest" . M is for Matte.
Not sure what the difference is on the early receiver.

In order to shed some light on this issue, I can send a set no charge if you cover the shipping.

I appreciate that, but I'll do some digging on my end when I have a little time next week. Somewhere I have some old catalogs, gun digests, etc., which may shed some light on that.

Are the Weaver-style bases more functional than the Redfield-style mount? I've not shot this rifle for some years, can't recall how reliably it throws ejected brass.

I would imagine $20 or $30, but I got it years and years ago. I believe my rifle dates from the late 1980s; it has a serial number in the 5.3 million neighborhood.

Regarding the choice of scope, I'd like to find something different than the old Weaver I have on it now, like a fixed 4x with a larger objective lens, to gather more light and make it more useful.

I bought these to scope one of my new 94's. The new 94's are a angle eject.
