new gun leaves me wondering were Tasco scopes ever any good ?

So picked up a Rem 700 chambered in 223. it for my son he's two but one day.
Anyway it had a lot of work done custom stock glass bedded, trigger, upgraded heavy barrel not factory i forgot the make, scope rings had been lapped. come in the gun store with a large collection of rifles that all had work done to them. The question is why do all that and put a Tasco scope on it. its a older Tasco glass looks good, were they decent a long time ago?

Yes, Tasco used to make good scopes with Japanese glass. They also made the Super Sniper line of scopes before they sold the SS line to SWFA.

I have one made in 1994 sitting in a miscellaneous junk box in the garage. Even back then I’d have a hard time calling it a quality optic.
Im a warmonger baby, I got blood in my eyes and I'm looking at you.

Taco made/makes cheap scopes for the average shooter. If your gun doesn't have much recoil they work well enough.
If your shooting a big boomer with a muzzlebrake there cheaper internals may not be able to handle the force and your crossbars can bounce around ruining your groups.
On a used rifle they sell and look better with a scope on them so for $100 you can put a Tasco on it and the gun will sell quicker than if it had a $6000 hendsholt on it.
To check a scope for its ability to hold point of aim you can buy a Charlie Hood scope checker.
It slides on to a dovetail base and holds two scopes. You dial both scopes so they are on the bullseye and fire a round. You put the first scope back on the bullseye and then look through the second scope to see where it is pointing. If the crossbars are bouncing all over the target the scope needs repair/replacement.

When your entire center fire shooting every year involves shooting 2-3 shots to make sure it hits a 8x11 piece of paper, then 1 shot to hit a 12-18" deer, some truly horrable scopes get the job done.

They are called Trashco for a reason. I got 5 given to me once. Three rattled right out of the box. Contacted Trashco and they said send them in with $10 each and we will look at them. I used them for targets. The other 2 I put on Craigs List for $10 each as I remember.
I did have one of their World Class models in 8X32 on a varmint rifle. It worked but you could not turn it above 22X and see anything as it would just blur everything. It was a bull barreled 223 and the scope fell apart after awhile.
Another junk scope is the BSA which means Back Slowly Away.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Can't believe they used to make the SS line.

Back in the 80's they made a pretty good product. I have one on a Ruger M77 in .243 that I have just about shot the barrel out of, and it still worked just fine the last time I shot the gun. It was what I could afford at the time. They may be crap today, but then so is NCStar and a host of others, but if that's all somebody can afford....Oh Well.

They used to make a 12-60 with a very large front bell and side focus. Back then a 5X magnification range was a big deal.
