    Sporter Mauser

Hey there! I have a sporter mauser. It doesn't have any sling mounting on it right now, and I want to figure out a solution. The problem is the sporter stock is too thin on the barrel to drill in a normal stud, so I think I need something that clamps on the barrel.

Is there anything like that out there, and is there any risk to doing a mounting system like that?

I don't have any, but they wouldn't add anything to the question of whether there's a negative repercussion to a 3rd party sling mount that is clamped directly to a rifle's barrel.

Does the rifle have a front sight mounted? If not, then a gunsmith can fit a barrel band sling stud easily. Look up pictures of mauser safari rifles to see what it looks like. Not good if you use the sling for shooting support, but fine for carrying the rifle.

There are clamp on barrel sling studs, but they tend to be very narrow diameter for fitting over magazine tubes on lever guns and .22s.

A gunsmith could probably mount a stock mounted sling stud even if the forend is thin, they'd use a backing plate to spread the clamping force out so the stud doesnt get torn out or crack the stock.

You can buy machine screw threaded sling studs that come with a backing plate for situations like yours. Look around the various sites such as Midway, Brownell's, etc.

Thanks! I'll look into that! The backing plate sounds like the best idea.
