    Lever or Pump

Which do you prefer? Would your opinion change given the situation?

      Too many variables.
      Shotgun or rifle?
      Magazine or tube fed?
      Caliber?

Lever action. More robust and has a good history as a general rule. More accessories too.

Have Winchester 94 30-30 lever and Remington Model 14 30 Remington pump. Cartridges are equal and can interchange load data. I like them both, but the pump is a little faster.

Plus for the pump rifle is if you have pump shotgun they both work the same. Except for newer pump rifles with detachable magazines load different.

I learned to shoot a pump shotgun. I got a Rem 760 in 30-06 as my 1st deer rifle. I have taken many animals with it. I have tried to shoot/hunt with a lever action but never did well and hated it.
So rifle or shotgun I like a pump. I also like semi-auto shotguns and even rifles.
My shotguns have tube feeds and the rifles a box mag except 22RF I also have tube and box feeds.

Do not care what "the situation" is.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

I recently searched for pump rifles. Pump rifles seem to be rare and expensive, so I think that if you want a rifle you will probably end up with a lever gun. Likewise, there aren't many choices for lever action shotguns. So if you decide you want a shotgun, you will probably end up with a pump.

But it would help a bit to know whether you were talking about hunting, home defense or target shooting. It looks like most pump rifles are large caliber which are frowned upon for home defense due to over penetration concerns. If you just want a .22 for plinking or hunting small game, you can find pump or lever action.

Since this is a centerfire forum, my answer is "none of the above". For almost any situation I can think of, I'd rather have a bolt action or autoloader than a lever or pump.

I chose a Remington 760, AKA Amish Machine Gun, for pig hunting. Pump makes for quick follow up shots.

I have both but for this lefty this Remington 760 carbine is just deadly fast and accurate. I've only found one make of 10 round magazines that will reliably feed .30M2 ball but with this magazine and 10 rounds of .30 ball it is a deadly package.

This is the carbine's big brother. It is a great shooting, accurate rifle but a bit unwieldy compared to the carbine.

My best lever action is my model 95 in .30-06. What a shooter! But slower than the pump.

Learned on my Dad's old Mossberg bolt 12G. It sounds odd, but that shotgun swings and shoots nice, for the first shot. The bolt made for a slow follow up shot. I think it is a 185 or a 195 model
