Encore pistol to rifle?

Have an Encore pistol, its ok to make it a rifle using a stock and barrel over 16" right? Does it need to be re drosd as a rifle? Going back to pistol is a no no correct? I have no desire to shoot this as a pistol anyways so im not upset if it cant revert. Thanks in advance for the replies gentleman.

I had my Contender DROS'ed as a bare receiver when I bought it used, so I can put any barrel/stock I want on it and still be legal.

One thing is sure you wouldn’t want to have a butt stock on the frame and a barrel less than 16” unless you have an SBR stamp. As far as I have know you don’t need to re-DROS as a long gun.

Keep in mind that state law prohibits it going back to pistol configuration even if federal law does not.

Can you imagine being in court for possession of a pistol that's legally registered to you anyway?

I don't believe that's the law. I think it's wildly misunderstood. No court is going to push that.

When you register/transfer it do it as a pistol frame. Federal Law and Ca law are a bit different. You can configure it into a rifle but must meet all of Ca sbr regs. If you transfer it as a rifle frame you cannot put a pistol barrel on it.

Since California does not follow ATF ruling on change barrel single shot pistol to rifle conversion. Why not keep the pistol grip and install a long barrel for more velocity? The longest barrel I have for my TC Contender is 21” in 223 Rem that I used for P-dog shooting. I’ve taken my TC Contender at the range with 16.5” 45/70 and my favorite blaster 18” 7-30 Waters. I’ve been harassed by another shooter telling me California law limits handgun barrels under 16” in length. Anyhooo... It’s a blast shooting TC Contender with a long barrel over a rest or bipod. An Encore will be a serious blast with a 500 S&W barrel, I’ve always wanted one in 16.5” with a muzzle brake/compensator.

A pistol can become a rifle but a then rifle can not become a pistol, so basically you can make a rifle but not put it back to a pistol.

At the moment I have only shot the 350 grain bullets rated at 1600 fps. The pistol manages it well it pushes you back more that straight up. Its actually pretty nice to shoot but super loud. Now I just have to try the hotter loads.

I had a 460 version of that same setup. Full loads were about 44 mag recoil, but the concussion blast gave everyone a sinus headache after a couple rounds. Nobody wanted to shoot it anymore so I sold the barrel.

I think the key point is the transfer of the weapon. If you transfer it as a rifle, there's no making it a pistol.

If you transfer it as a pistol, make it a rifle, and then make it a pistol again, you still legally have registered, by serial number, that pistol under your name. No transfer though.

There's been tons of speculation about Glocks and mechtechs. I don't believe anyone would be charged with putting the Glock slide back on since they legally own that serialized and defined pistol, regardless of the rifle upper being used.

@jtroks I picked up a 20" stainless fluted 500sw barrel for my project. I had the receiver casehardened by Turnbull and have a custom stock on its way. The barrel is a Katahdin and it comes with a peep sight set up. Its gonna be real purdy when its all together. Ill be sure to post pics.
