    Current Remington Finish Quality?

Have a Remington 700 in 223 HB 26" in jail and the rifle has a Matte parkerised looking finish. I've seen complaints in the past of their finishes rusting easily - is this still an issue or have they improved things?

I'm probably going to be driving down to SoCal to have Randall re-stock/bed the action, thread the muzzle for a Comp/Suppressor, etc. so figured if the stock finish was mediocre, I'd have him strip and re-do it.

I cannot speak as to the current quality or durability of that finish. I have had two Remington shotguns with it and both rusted to some extent, despite being wiped down with Barricade rust preventative. A buddy's 870 Express really rusted badly, despite dehumidifiers (two) in his safe. Rubbing down with Kroil and very fine steel wool took it off, but was messy. These are all a couple of years old, though, but how long ago was your rifle actually made versus sitting in inventory at the factory, distributor and finally the dealer?

I have a 2015 SPS Varmint. I get light rusting if I don't wipe it down with Remoil before storing. I have noticed that solvent collecting on the underside of the muzzle has removed a lot of the coating (whatever they used - not talking bare steel, but a definite thinning of the material.) Barrel exterior, tang, and the cocking piece seem to be the most prone to surface rust.

I was using a couple of rechargeable dessicant packs in the safe, but found them pretty useless. I now run one of the Browning heater thingies and it seems to work substantially better (though my whole pre-storage regimen has changed, so I can't say that I'm 100% sure that's what caused the improvement.)

It's what frog lube is good for or you can use cooking oil to season it like cast iron pots n pans. Cooking oil is what I used on 783 no rust, figured if it works preventing rust on black powder firearms and cast iron pots n pans, it would work on anything and it did.

Put one of these in your safe. It will fill up with water so you'll have to change it once in awhile.

I have the same gun and the bolt handle seems to rust very easily. My rifles including my target rifles are tools that get used and are never babied.
I see it as an annoyance but not a deal breaker.

Thanks for the replies. Will just keep her wiped down with Corrosion-X and see if that will keep the rust away.

                Randall does not do bedding.

If you are going to upgrade the trigger. Do it before you drive down and have him tune the bolt.
Are you going to add a DBM?

Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

Had a friend drive home (5 hour drive) from hunting the Salton Sea and by the time he got home his 870 barrel (parkerised type finish) was covered in rust. That's enough to keep me from buying anything remington with that finish.

Are you aware, that rifle barrel is a 1-12 twist.

He may be lucky and have that twist rate actually work with 77's. From what I understand the Hornady 68's will stabilize, but heavier weights are trial and error with the Rem 700.

It’s going to rust. All my new Remington’s are orange in places. I’ll cerokote them someday but no rush.

Not everyone wants to shoot 80-90 grain bullets in a 223 and at such low velocities.

Thanks for pointing out that bedding is not a service Randall offers. It does say on his 700barrels.com site that he does Pillar Bedding and inletting for detachable magazine bottom metal.

I have a Timney 510 trigger purchased from another CG'er that I'll install before heading down to Randall's.

Yes, I would like to be able to use detachable magazines so need to purchase new bottom metal. Was looking at pacifictoolandgauge.com but unsure which one or if PT&G is the way to go. I want to re-stock the rifle without spending a whole lot of $ so will probably look at Boyd's. I'd like to try to keep weight down too as I do plan on occasionally walking/hiking with the rifle. Do you have any suggestions in those regards?

Yes, I'm aware of the 1-12 twist rate. It is what it is and I'll be happy with whatever it will stabilize.

I have two Remington 783's (223 and 308) that I bought about three years ago, no problems with rusting so far. All I do is wipe down with WD40 after use.
If I had to describe myself in one word it would be "bad at following directions"
