Hey calgunners I have a few questions on a 6.5 creed build that I am currently gathering parts for. I’m getting ready to order a PTG 1 piece bolt, and firing pin assembly for a Remington 700. I plan on having the action trued and barrel fitted once I have everything I need. Will probably make the drive down to SoCal to have Randall complete the work.

1. What’s everyone’s opinion on firing pin diameters? Small or large diameter? Steel, fluted, or aluminum? I’m thinking steel fluted small diameter to decrease lock time.

2. PTG’s website doesn’t have m16 extractors with pin and spring. Are they the same as a std AR15 pin and spring or should I go with the mini since they have those with the pin and spring?

3. After some research it seems the receiver raceway is opened up to .7050” so Bolt diameter should be .7020” if I plan to cerakote bolt correct?

4. The stock I have I got used and I believe had a .250” tapered recoil lug. So to keep things simple should I just order the same lug? Or can this be reworked if my smith recommends something different?

Im not sure if this applies to bolt guns, but there are some issues with the AR10 platform on 6.5 Creedmoor firing pin and bolt. On the AR10 platform, the pressure is greater in 6.5 Creedmoor vs .308. The solution is to have a matched bolt and firing pin to have a smaller "gap" between the two. People were finding the primer was flowing in between the bolt and firing pin and deforming the primer while firing due to increased pressure. I used a JP Rifle bolt and firing pin. Again, I have no idea if this relates to bolt action rifles.

PTG one-piece oversized bolt at 702-704 and a stainless recoil lug.
The bolt without the flutes with a small firing pin hole and assembly in case you ever shoot small primer cartridges down the road when you replace the barrel.
Things I've read, been told, and have implemented into my 6.5 CR build that was done by Randall.

Yeah get the 0.062 firing pin. It doesn't matter what size primer or flashhole you use the smaller pin is better.
I don't understand the M16 extractor issue. Is PT&G out of them? Or are you saying they don't offer it for your bolt?
I ask because Focus and Myself both got M16 extractors for our Tac408 actions. I waited and he ended up getting a Stiller.
On the recoil lug they have so many options ask Randall which one he prefers.

Randall prefers straight recoil lugs, but will build the rifle with what ever you bring him. From my own personal experience, I won't be doing a tapered lug again. I had one installed and had inleted my stock to it. Switched to a chassis, and the lug wouldn't fit. Straight lugs always fit.

Will this work it says std/magnum then lists a bunch of magnum cases in parentheses. Kind of confusing. I guess I read it as it will work with a std .484 bolt face in addition to those magnum cases?

Otherwise it looks like they only sell it bare with no pin and spring. If it’s the same as a std ar15 I have spare extractors, pins, and springs on hand.

The extractor is the same one regardless of the boltface size you choose on the 700.

When you order a bolt you tell them 0.075 or 0.062 on the firing pin.
They then ask which boltface you want and they list 223 6ppc 308 300 Magnum and 338 Magnum usually.
They then ask what extractor and you click on M16 Mini M16 Saki or Remington usually.
Next they ask you about fluting and you pick no fluting or whatever design you prefer.
Lastly after you enter all of that info they have a little box that lets you put in the bolt diameter in half a thousandths increments..

What they forget to tell you is you need the M16 kit which you already found.
Next you need a firing pin assembly or all of the individual pieces that make one up.
Next you need a bolt handle and a knob. I prefer the extended straight handle but some shooters like the straight normal handle or the swept handle.
On the firing pin assembly if you don't buy it as a unit you need to pick the pin you want the cocking piece you want the spring rate you want the bolt shroud you want and the cocking piece pin to hold it all together.
There are a ton of options and various colours as well.
On the recoil lug they run from 0.187 like on a factory gun to 0.500 which is very very thick. They have no holes one hole two holes and three holes for a pinned lug. You can get them with straight sides or with tapered sides. If you get one with straight sides 0.250 thick a tapered sided one 0.250 thick will work just as well but you can't go the other way around.
This is why the 700 is the most cloned action in existence.
In the picture the bottom bolt is factory the next one up has a BAT bolt handle that most shooters like the next one is a Hart straight handle that most shooters think is ugly. The top two handles are the long straight handles from Pacific Tool one with a huge knob I don't like and one showing the threads.
The top bolt has spiral fluting and a 0.704 bolt body which is considered tight.
The second bolt body has light diamond fluting which I don't like and the bolt body has what is called a fitted bolt. It has less than 0.0005 clearance and is tough just to install it in the action. The second bolt down also has a Lawton extra tight bolt shroud. Lots and lots of options so make sure you get what you want the first time or you'll burn up your credit card ordering.
You can also get a coned bolt if you want.
The other picture hopefully shows the thickness difference between a 0.187 and a 0.250 stainless steel tapered single pin recoil lug.

Thanks for all the great info and photos Lynn. I ended up ordering a 1 piece bolt with small spiral flutes, a mini 16 extractor, small diameter steel fluted firing pin assembly, ejector kit, and a .228 straight lug in stainless.

Anyone have any idea on their lead times? It says 8-12 weeks for the bolt. Hoping this isn’t true but it is what it is. I just placed the order a few minutes ago.
