Mauser Suhler Scopes

I want to put together a scope for a Mauser 98.

It has a suhler double claw base already installed on it. I've heard that they're custom fit and require machining for getting the scope to mount. Is this assuming the scope rings are fit on the scope already? Could I buy rings off eBay and then get a scope in those rings, or is there more going on here than I currently understand?

I have been tempted to undertake such a project. Years ago I had an Oberndorf Mauser with claw mounts. I found the correct scope and searched high and low for claw mounts. I toyed with the idea of making my own mounts or having mounts made by a gunsmith. The results was that I was told by many smiths that is would cost about $1000 to make the rings for the gun and would take months to complete. I gave up and sold the rifle and scope to a collector.

A few years ago, I stumbled upon New England Custom Gun Service, Ltd.
You may want give them a call and see if they have any ideas or contact one of the smiths on CG and see if they have any ideas.

Thanks for the information. Having a period correct scope isn't super important for me at this time, so I was wondering how much of the $1000 fitting was just from getting older scopes with rings already on them to fit, or if there was something preventing the claws from clipping into the base. If the claws fit, I would think it's just a matter of finding a scope I like that also fits the spacing and diameter of the rings?

If you just want a shooter and it's not a collector gun most gunsmiths can drill and tap it for weaver bases. After that any combination will work and that's as cheap as it gets.

The issue you are going to have is getting the "claw" mount rings. Many were custom made by each smith....

So often no two were alike.
