Just getting into precision shooting

I was looking at the Tikka T3 Tac A1 in 6.5 creedmoor or a Bergara B-14 BMP also in 6.5 creedmoor, I want to spend $2,000 at most on a rifle. What would you recommend in this price point?

The Bergara got a glowing review on youtube, and it uses AICS compatible mags. I've never played with one, but it's unlikely to be as smooth as a Tikka with the teflon-impregnated bolt.

Tikka or a 700 5R would be my first choice. Savage Target series are also great shooters out of the box.

I would cruise the classifieds for a used custom. Most of the $2000 factory rifles simply don't have the accuracy if your looking for a precision rifle. Of course every once in awhile people get lucky with a sub 1/2 moa gun, but that seems to be the exception. I've had plenty of guys come to me with $2-3K factory rifles asking me how to make them shoot better. I advise them to sell it and go custom or buy used. If your set on a new rifle, go Rem 5R.

What kind of shooting are you planning on doing (benchrest, prone, etc.), what kind of distance and under what conditions? Answers to these questions could help you narrow your focus. I know that Tikka makes some accurate rifles; so does Savage (probably in that price range). Hope that this helps.

I'm biased towards Tikka....recently upgraded the stock on my CTR. Common question "Why didn't you get the Tac A1?". Chassis systems aka bolt guns with pistol grips isn't my thing. I liked the "old school" tactical stocks reminiscent of the Remington M40 or FN SPR with McMillans.




Haven't handled a Bergara since they were introduced into the market after I had bought my CTR. Does looks like a solid rifle with plenty of features. Just as BroncoMustang had mentioned above, tell us what you plan to do with the rifle in terms of use. Good luck on your adventure!!!

There is a nice sale on the Ruger RPR in 6mm Creedmoor from Grab A Gun. I couldn't resist, $759.99 + $7.99 shipping to your FFL dealer. Hope that this one shoots as well as my other RPR in 6.5 Creedmoor. I'm pretty sure it will. Good luck, I know it's not as a high dollar rifle as you were looking for but, I thought that I would throw it out there.

You could just spend the rest of the money on optics.

Nobody ever listens to this advice but I’ll go ahead and lay it out for ya.

You should be focusing on your optic, not the rifle. I’d rather have a cheap rifle and an expensive scope.

I would do all my research right now on scopes. Figure out which one you want, then do more research...a lot more. Then change your mind 15 times and decide for the last time which scope you want.

Now that you finally settled on a scope, price out the bipod, scope base, ring etc that you want and see how much you have left over for a rifle.

If you can get one of the ones you listed above, go for it.

Also, you said you want to get into precision shooting...do you mean long range? What distances?

There are a lot of Shooters who thought they wanted to get into Precision Field, I agree with Goat cruise the Classified, the show up on Turners site all the time but never decent buys. Optics are they key as is Reloading your Own. You won’t just buy one either
