    what's a heavy 308 bolt? (under $1000)

i shot an Axis, a Tikka, and a Spanish Mauser 308 (the one that was rechamber to 308). I actually enjoy the Mauser most, the Axis and Tikka kicks quite a bit (yeah, i am weak). I am guessing the mauser was quite heavy and soaks up most of the felt recoil. So is there a modern bolt action that's heavy in weight? Or somehow doesn't kick as hard.

edit: purpose is punch paper only, won't be hunting with it. and I already have a 783 in 223 which i absolutely love.

most popular, Remington 700 AAC-SD. to add a mag you will need a DBM and have a gunsmith do the install plus a mag.
spend 1200 and get a chassis rifle. many choices

Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

I personally have a Howa 308 20 inch heavy barrel, I can shoot it all day long. So far it has been sub Moa. Using Federal gold medal match. I'm thinking I can get it better then that with reloads.

Consider a smaller caliber. Unless you are shooting over 400 yards a .223 will be fine and is much cheaper to shoot.

I have a Savage 12 that has a "varmint" barrel, 26 inches long. It's pretty heavy, and way under $1000.

If you're looking for a hunting gun I'll second the Howa/Weatherby Vanguard as a good heavy gun. And as others say, just about every gun these days comes in a heavy-barreled variant. Sometimes they're labeled "predator." (Target guns and predator guns are very similar.) If you're just punching paper, sd joe makes a good point about a lighter caliber.

Brownells has Howa barreled actions on sale--

Then get the Hogue stock with the aluminum full bedding block. Bolts right on.

I’ll second Weatherby Vanguards. Not only are they on the heavy side, their stock design pulls the comb away from your cheek instead of banging in to it during the recoil impulse.

What are you planning to do with it? If all you're doing is punching paper or ringing steel, get a .223. You'll want a larger caliber for longer distances or hunting but if you're limited to 200 yards or less most of the time, a .223 is just fine. Anything bigger and you're burning money.

Have you considered adding lead weights to the stocks of your other rifles to add weight? Scratch that just read it that you only shot other rifles. On a side note any Remington 700 with a plastic stock can be stuffed with a enough weight to cut down on recoil.

                            https://grabagun.com/remington-85847...n-blk-syn.html $260.99
This and Boyds Classic laminated stock https://www.boydsgunstocks.com/, $137.00 for a plain Jane, price will go up if you want special recoil pad, checkering, special colors, etc... They also have different style stocks like Prairie Hunter in same price range or the At-one for $189.

My 783 in Boyds Classic laminate weighs 9 lbs with Weaver 3-10 40/44 scope, loaded 4rnd mag and military type web sling on kitchen scale. This is it without sling on it.

If you're wanting an old military rifle in 308. The 2A1 Enfields are cool. They weigh about 9 1/2 to 10 lbs.
