Weatherby vanguard advice

I have recently come across a weatherby vanguard in 270 win. for 350 bucks. I've been looking for a 270 rifle for a while but, I dont know much about this rifle. Is this a good deal?

Supposedly comes with a 1 MOA guarantee with good factory ammo.

From what I have heard, most people do actually get pretty good accuracy out of these straight from the factory.

I have one of these in 30.06. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Need to scope it and work up a load.

For $350, it is worth a shot.

Apparently Weatherby uses Howa actions in some of their rifles. I have a Howa 1500 in .223 and I'm very happy with its accuracy.

I hunt so I'm looking for rifles that shoot 1 MOA or better out of the box and the Howa fit the bill.

I have one in 300 wsm. It is an earlier version with the non floated barrel but that doesn't seem to affect hunting accuracy one bit. 350 is a pretty solid price imo. 270 win can't go wrong there either. Good luck to you.

OP, the series 2 rifles have the free-floated stock. Mine is an S2.

Shouldn't be too hard to figure out which one yours is.

the howa 1500 and the weatherby vanguard are basically the same rifle. weatherby puts a couple weatherby "tweaks" on it, but for all practical purposes they are the same.

This is my understanding as well.

I seem to recall reading something about magwells being available for detachable mags. I believe only the short action models have this capability.

The S2 model came with the 1" MOA guarantee. The previous model was a decent shooter with a crappy trigger.

We have four in the family, three S2’s and the version before the S2. The pre S2 rifle has had a trigger job and sports a S2 stock. The S2 synthetic stocks are better than the standard hogue stock on a Howa. The S2 trigger is much better than the old Howa trigger but Howa recently upgraded their triggers. It’s called the HACT and from what I can tell it is an S2 trigger.

If it's in good condition - clean bore, etc. - then that's a good price for what should be a very good rifle. If you don't like the trigger a Timney is an easy upgrade and would still be a low-cost gun. Some here mention free-floated barrels. If Weatherby is free-floating these things that's news to me. I have an S2 in 30-06 that came with a pressure-point on the stock. It shoots half-MOA with some light stock pressure and Barnes factory ammo. The 24-inch #2 barrels are skinny and shoot better with pressure or bedding most of the time. Only drawback I see to these guns is their weight - about 7.5 pounds bare. Nice to shoot a heavy gun but not great to carry it.
