The Remington Model 700 SPS is CA legal.

Which online retailer were you looking at?

      CA restrictions for bolt-action rifles:
      1. Minimum barrel length of 16". [PC 17170(a)]
      2. Minimum overall length of 26". [PC 17170(b)]
      3. Can not be chambered in .50BMG. [PC 30530(a)]

Might just be that individual online retailer won’t sell anything to CA. A few places have jumped on that bandwagon

Out of state vendor just does not want to bother with CA laws.
You will see a lot of sellers on gunbroker, that will not ship to CA.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

I went to put the 700 SPS in my cart at Brownells and received this message.

"Additional State restrictions and/or documents apply to this zip code. You may continue with your online purchase but your order will be placed on hold until all compliance requirements are met."

They cannot ship it directly to you.

I think the OP needs to look at the fine print. It does say "Ship: No", but underneath that it has the text that I provided earlier. I take this to mean they weill not ship it to you, and that it needs to go through a FFL.

no, that's not the case. a Phoenix zip code does not generate the text you're talking about. "Yes" is the simple response to "Can we ship this to you". and of course the FFL requirement is in effect to ship a rifle to Phoenix.

Brownells is OFF my vendor list.

I am able to put it into my cart and have it shipped to my listed FFL. I was one click away from placing the order. Nothing out of the ordinary.

I think the OP needs to place the order and contact Brownells if there are any issues.

CA has many more restrictions then AZ. It is not surprising that there would be more hurdles in the way. The order may need to be checked and verified before going to CA due to the never ending list of restrictions etc.... Again, the only way to find out for sure is for the OP to try to place the order and give more details....

I also see numerous dealers on GunBroker that refuse to ship a firearm to California. I sold a shotgun to someone in California five years ago. I don’t remember exactly what they were but there was an extra hoop or two that had to be jumped through from the shipping(my) end. But it wasn’t that big of a deal.

I have wondered if shipping to California is really that much harder for dealers or if there is a subconscious backlash on the part of some against all of the anti 2nd Amendment laws in California. Kind of along the lines of the firearms makers who have recently stated they’ll no longer do business with Dick’s.

CA requires FFL to registered with their stupid importation program before shipping a firearm into CA.
