In the 6mm (30 caliber) range the 6.5 Creedmoor is a relatively new and now very popular because of its excellent ballistics. There is a lot of support from ammunition makers too.

Most bolt rifle manufacturers have jumped on the Creedmoor bandwagon. Take a look at the Ruger RPR (Ruger Precision Rifle) in 6.5 Creedmoor. It is made to be modular and there is after market support. The RPR starts at only $1500 too.

In .22, the 224 Valkyrie is new runs on an AR, uses AR mags, and is highly accurate. 1000 yard shots are said to be doable with the Valkyrie. This is very affordable if you already own an AR all you have to do is buy the Valkyrie upper.

sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.

If you aren't shooting beyond 300 yards and you don't plan on hunting it's hard to beat .223. It's a lot cheaper than other calibers. You can buy it anywhere and everywhere that ammo is sold and you can shoot it all day long without fatiguing your shoulder.

I have rifles in over a dozen different calibers. I shoot .223 more often than any of the other caliber.

Now if cost and availability weren't an issue I'd say 30-40 Krag is one of my personal faves.

Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

As Randall has said, the 700 is FAR and away the way to go if you plan to change things. Everyone makes parts to fit the 700. Triggers, stocks, bolts, bottom metal, magazines. If they make something for any bolt action rifle, they make it for the 700

Currently I believe the best out of the box to be the 5r models. I bought one in 308 and am very happy with it. I changed my own trigger. Two pins and done. Bottoms metal/detach mags, two screws and done. Stock was a drop in fit.

I am very glad I bought the 700.

Inside 300 yards, 223 will be fine.

                      For a new shooter Id say a 223 or a 6.5 Creedmore.

.223 probably has the cheapest ammo, but if you can find a .222, they seem to be inherently more accurate. They used to do well on the match circuit and a friend of mine bought a cheap Remington many years ago and it's accuracy surprised us both.

I've just bought a second .223 with a heavy barrel for shooting varmints.

223 and be done with it. Later if you want you can get a larger caliber/cartridge for longer shooting distances and such
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.
