Recommendations for a bolt action?

I don't have either, but do have a few Savage rifles, which I like quite a bit. The Ruger might be better out of the box and needs less work. The answers you'll get will be dependent on what you plan to do/ expect out of the rifle, distance, and volume of shooting. If you're going to do a lot of shooting at like 300 yards or less then the 223 will be easier on the shoulder and wallet. Factory ammo is readily available for both, but the 223 will cost a little less. If you reload, it'll cost less for 224 projectiles and powder. -
RPR is very accurate out of the box while the rem is more hit and miss from what i've read. With that said, the 700 has a lot of options for customization (stocks, triggers, barrels, etc...).
Unless you plan on really building out your rifle in the future, go with the rprComment

Way too little info here to give a recommendation.
What is the primary use?
What distances?
What size targets?
Do you like to customize your guns or do you typically leave them stock?
What's the budget?
Do you reload?
What's your realistic precision (group size at distance) requirement?Randall Rausch

In 308 between the Ruger Precision Rifle and Remington 700, I'd want the Remington 700.
The model 700 VLS (varmint laminated stock) delivers tack driving, varmint rifle accuracy with a handsome, resin impregnated, laminated stock. Includes monte carlo
If getting 223/5.56 I'd want either Mossberg MVP Varmint or Ruger American Predator
5.56mm NATO (.223 Rem.), 24" Fluted Medium Bull Barrel, Matte Blue Finish, Laminate Bench Rest Stock, LBA™ Trigger, Spiral Fluted Bolt, 10 Round Magazine

I have a Savage .223 and a CZ 527 in .223. My Savage is an older 110, made before they came out with the short Model 10 action, with a short heavy barrel called a "4x4" model. It shoots fantastic as in about 1/2 inch at 100 and often less. I did replace the factory stock with a Bell and Carlson. It has a 1 in 9" twist and handles bullets up to the 69 gr Matchking.
The CZ also shoots very well, but it is a lightweight American model for walking around and the barrel heats up faster, It also shoots very well with handloads using 55 gr or lighter bullets.
I have Tikkas, Remingtons, Winchesters, Howas, Vanguards, etc. They all shoot pretty well after tweaking. The Tikkas, however, required no changes to shoot very well.Comment

Since you rarely shoot and dont really seem enthusiastic about .308 or .223 why dont you consider 6.5 creedmoor?CRPA and NRA member.
Note that those who have repeatedly expressed enough vile and incoherent content as to render your views irrelevant, have been placed on my ignore list. Thank you for helping me improve my experience and direct my attention towards those who are worthy of it. God bless your toxic little souls.Comment

I have both Ruger Precision Rifle 6.5CM and Remington 700 5R 308. Ever since I brought the RPR 6.5CM home, I enjoy shooting it more often than the Remington 700. If I have to start over from scratch, I would go with the RPR 6.5CM without any hesitation.sigpic

You are probably right but since he's thinking about a 308 or a 223, I'm going to say get a 6mm Creedmore. The 223 gets boring real quick in a bolt action. The 6mms are fun to shoot and pack some punch without costing too much recoil.sigpicComment

Might consider which one fits him best and feels best.
Considering the amount he shoots and only paper get the 223. Less recoil, cheaper.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

If you like the chassis style, consider the "Weatherby Vanguard Modular Chassis" on sale for $900 at CDNN. I think it has an MDT chassis, comes with a Luth AR stock and a moa guarantee. Nice discount off the msrp.
