Marlin 1895 GBL 45-70, which glass?

So... part of my birthday celebration this year involved picking up a 45-70 lever gun. Partly because I always wanted one, and partly because it was one of my favorites that my father had. (Dad's was stolen about 20 years ago, never to be seen again.)

I'm shopping around for some glass, and wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I'll be running hot 400+ grain loads through it, and don't want to have my optic get shaken apart.

I'm planning for maybe shooting some hogs, and hitting steels out to 200 or so meters.

What have you guys used that would be good on this mule kicker, hopefully in the sub-$500 range?

I was over at the rod and gun off union mine last weekend with a older Leopold mk2 long eye relief scope on my brothers Marlin 45-70 I was setting up for him especially for hogs in the hills west of Willows. While it was pretty nice for the both eyes open shooting I still would prefer the over the receiver mount and decent glass.
Vortex comes to mind simply due to customer service and warranty replacement ease.
If price isn't an issue I would buy better glass obviously
Shot about 150 of the Hornady ballistic tip 350 grain without any problems with the scope.

How about a 4x shotgun scope?

Leupold VX-R 1.25-4x with illuminated Hog Plex reticle (though some marketing "genius" had Hog Plex written on the reticle)

I'd personally consider a red dot, 3x prism, or an ACOG. The reason is they're fast action reflex sights. The 45-70 is primarily a short range carbine that is fast into action, so I'd use an optic that is compatible with that strength. All 3 mentioned optics can be used with both eyes open for speed and awareness.

Most people use 2-7x scopes on levers for hunting. But I personally think the three I mentioned are more apropos.

That's exactly my thoughts. Irons is the only way to go.

A went with a dnz mount and the leupold mount since the last setup bent due to recoil. Both sport leupold 2x7, one with the ballistic red dot. 100 yards is fuzzie so yeah I need a scope.

OOOOH, where'd you get the cool leather stuff from?

Tagg... I'd also like to know who made the leather. It's looks great!

That. 200 yard brush gun does not need a large scope; magnification or physical size.

                          Or this:

Lol... you know, I expected this to be in the first responses... my father would agree.

I've got a vortex prism sitting around currently un-assigned... but tacti-cool is not what I'm going for here.

The Leupold's are looking like what I was looking for. I've had very good luck with them on other guns. With the exception of the "Pig Plex" reticle... what knucklehead came up with that?
