What caliber do you want to shoot? I love that I have an MVP in 5.56 and I don’t believe you can get an R700 in 5.56, but I think they both come in .308 (I know the 700 does, along with many other calibers).

The Remingtons I've seen have a slow twist, 1 in 12. Bullets much heavier than 60 grains won't stabilize well. The Howa 1500 has a 1 in 9 twist and shoots bullets at least as heavy as 69 grains well. Under $350 online.

MVP has either 1-7 or 1-9 twist depending on model and it uses AR mags. Remington 783 has 1-9 twist $312 or so online.

I have an MVP. It would be harder to come up with a wonkier bolt. Multiple parts associated with the flapper round stripper. Action is wobbly & sticky.

...but it DOES take AR magazines, so there is that. It's a Mossberg.

Mine was a little sticky when I first got it. It's not sticky anymore as far as the wobble goes, it's wobble is not much more than a 03 Springfield and is close to same as my 98 Mausers.

My Polish Mosin was buttery slick compared to the Mossberg...

Remington tactical 223 has 1/9 twist.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

Never had a tube fed bolt action, isnt that mostly for .22lr or leverguns? Anyway, neither the R700 or MVP uses a tube magazine. As for detachable box magazines (DBM) in bolt actions it really comes down to user preference. Bolt action hunting rifles arent really designed for suppressive fire so a DBM is not really necessary. Bolt guns are more for precise shots, one shot = one kill. A 3 rd internal magazine is adequate for most bolt gun applications like big game hunting. I shoot pretty slowly with my bolt guns and my milsurps have stripper clip guides. I did however convert my R700 to a DBM with the magpul stock and DBM kit. It uses AICS pattern mags which are pretty universal. I like it more than the internal magazine because it is way easier to load and unload for me. I dont like trying to load an internal magazine round by round its hard for me to drop the rounds in under the optic mount and push them in evenly. I can also use 10rd AICS magazines which look really funny but its about the only way to get a 10rd capacity in a .30cal bolt gun.

I have owned Mossberg MVPs in both 5.56 NATO and 7.62 NATO (still have the 5.56 one, but sold the 7.62 version).

I have owned Remington 700s in both 223 and 308 (still have the 223 one, but sold the 308 version in favor of 6mm and 6.5mm versions).

The MVP actions are a bit sloppy and clunky to operate, but they work. Cool thing is that they accept AR magazines of the appropriate caliber (AR-15 for 5.56 and DPMS/SR-25 for 7.62). They come with relatively thick, short barrels, accuracy is respectable (just verify that the scope base screws are properly torqued from the factory, ask me how I know hehe).

The 700 actions are much tighter yet smoother to operate, but you pay a bit more for that. Heavy barrel models exhibit great accuracy out-of-the-box, especially the 5R versions.

Yeah with the Mossberg, you have to have a loaded mag or remove the mag or they are rough. It's the little flap thing on the bolt running over the mag follower I think.

                          Thomson compass.
Cheap, accurate and a good value.
If your punching paper a fixed Mag is fine imo.https://youtu.be/cnDPn52q5Ik
