"But mainly democrat voters would still vote Democrat if they elected Satan himself who ate babies as they came out of mother's wombs and killed people in the street. They hate republicans that much and are in that level of denial about what their party is about. They just simply can't handle the cognitive dissonance...." -Skilletboy

        American 7.62x39

I took the rifle out for a spin today, but only shot 14 rounds of American Eagle FMJ. The photo is the last 4 rounds from 50 yards....I need to free float the barrel it is touching on one side.

After 14 rounds of 'OK" ammo I like the rifle.

They are simply great rifles! I owned a CZ 527 for a while and liked the rifle, but the backwards safety just never really worked for me. I loved the iron sights, but scoping it was awkward and accuracy with surplus ammo was just mediocre. When the Ruger came out I was really hopeful as I still had a ton of ammo and liked shooting the 7.62x39 out of a bolt action. Using the Mini30 mag was just icing on the cake. Mine is extremely accurate, has virtually no recoil, handy, and can take a beating. As much as I love my Lever Actions, this rifle might end up being the modern incarnation of this concept: light, compact, reasonably powerful, and accurate (or in the case of the Ruger, More Than Accurate) for moderate ranges.

Looking at the Howa and the Ruger, it appears that only the Ruger actually has 10-round magazines in 7.62x39. Am I missing something?

The Ruger American Ranch in 7.62x39 can take all mags made for a Mini-30. Unsure about the Howa, but the Ruger mags are generally reliable and are easily obtained. The 10-rounders are handiest.
