Thoughts on a light, mild game-getter on a budget.

I’m good with anything around 8lbs. Are boyds stocks in the 2# range?
How about a lighter option?

A boyds will probably put you in the 8-8.5# range without a scope. A heavy Vortex will be another 1#.

My advice is either use the ruger as is and get a lighter scope like a Leupold, or better yet get a Tikka. With a fullsize scope mine weighs 7.5# loaded with a sling.

If it's a "game getter", you need none of those options. The stock is heavy, the scope is heavy and the bottom metal and AICS mags get you nothing over the factory set up.

Nothing listed above will get you more game.

I agree. Lighter is better, especially if you're not a teenager any more.

If you're going to replace the scope because it might not hold up, you want something in the 2-8 power range. 12X is more than you need for game.

My "game getter" is a .30-06 with a Leupold 2.5-8 power scope but if you're like me and prefer to get close, a .308 would also fit the bill, it wouldn't punish you quite so much, and ammunition is cheap and easy to find.

Sounds like a compromise rifle someone built and then figured out that compromises suck.
It's not heavy enough to be a good target gun, but way too heavy to be a good hunting gun.
