    .300 Savage Model 99

This is a Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage. My dad gave me this for my 40th birthday. A friend gave me the Stith (??) mount and I got the Alaskan scope off another guy. Forty bucks I think. This gun was made in 1948 and my dad was the 2nd owner. The first guy notched the fore end for every dear he killed with it, with open standard sights, no tang peep. 18 notches counting the ones on the other side. All that old stuff in that picture was my dad's minus the 1951 Colt Cobra. I took this for a photo contest once. Fifteen years ago these 99s were $200 piled up in used gun racks. Then like everything else prices shot up.

I have one also chambered in 300 Savage. I am the second owner, it is excellent condition. Mine has the "fat" fore grip and a 24" barrel. I think they are one of the coolest looking firearms.

If your's isn't a Featherweight from the 1950s and is a full size rifle, is it the model R or RS? But there might have been 1920s versions with fatter fore ends, but not sure. There's so many variations of this fine gun.

I have two in 300. Next on the list is 250-3000

I have shot a variety of calibers in Marlin 94 and 1895, Winchester 92 and 94. The Savage 99 is my favorite, at range and in the field

I believe it is a pre-war R. Its not a featherweight. The forearm has 2 lines engraved on it towards the muzzle end.

That's a desirable version of a Savage. My 1955 Featherweight has the beefier forend. I think it's hollowed out like the butt stock which kept it down to around 6 1/2 lbs.

Great looking collection Wyatt. I would love to see more of these 1899/99's.

Thanks. I think these guns are very photogenic. It seems people either love 'em or totally ignore them. In the 1990s I peaked in a gun store in Oregon and there was a full rack of around ten of these there, all used, of course. Looks like these guns were very popular in that heavy forested area.

My grandfather had one of these; my dad sold it in the '90s. I'd love to track it down someday - I think we have paperwork with the S/N somewhere.

What a great gift of a rifle with a story to tell. That Savage 99 is one I always coveted, for it's grace, balance and that spool magazine in early versions. I borrowed one in .300 Savage for a hunt when I didn't have anything suitable, confirming it was everything I imagined. Maybe I'm just suffering from the aura of nostalgia that develops in old men that remember a simpler time, then again maybe Savage had such a classic design in the 99 that it still calls to the rifleman that appreciates form and function over novelty and hype. I should have bought one long ago, but now . . . well, maybe some day.

I have been storing my wife’s grandfather’s 99 in .300 Savage since he passed in ‘97, the rifle is in mint condition, I have the hanging tag/envelope with an exploded drawing inside and the slightly used Savage cleaning kit that came with it. My brother-in-law didn’t want his grandpa’s guns, but his 16 y/o son does, he’s going to get his great grandpa’s 99 when he’s 18.
