I have gotten to the point where iron sights (except USGI sights) are about useless for me past 50 yards. I asked the wife for a compact scope for my Ruger Scout .223 carbine and gave her a couple options.
She bought me a Leupold Mark AR Mod-1 1.5x4.5 that has a range knob calibrated to the M193 5.56mm round. Apparently range knobs for other factory loads can also be purchased.
I didn't expect her to spend this amount of money on a scope for me and I was really happy to receive it Christmas morning. I included on the list as the high end of the range. This scope is the first 'real' scope I've owned after decades of Weavers, Bushnells, and Burris' bargain scopes. I do have a Nikon 3-9 scope, not bad but not in the same league at the Leupold.
I sighted it in yesterday. The windage was dead on from the factory and the elevation was easily dialed in.
It sure is nice to see the target clearly again! The range increments are on perfectly. I shot at steel plates out to 400 yards and the elevation knob brought each plate in range for the first shot.
Highly recommended!
