So now I can spend more money on a new rifle. I had been considering stuff near the $1000 mark, like the RPR (not really) and the Savage Stealth. I can now open up the wallet enough to consider stuff like the Bergara BPR 17 and the Tikka TAC A-1. Are these higher priced guns worth the higher prices or are they just more expensive because they're furrin? I haven't played with these because I intended to get one of the cheaper types.

I think that it would be very difficult to recommend a rifle unless you tell what kind of shooting that are you going to do.
Long range, plinking, competition, hunting? Each category there has multiple minimum requirements depending on what specific type of shooting you want to do.NRA Endowment Life MemberComment

About what the Tikka and Bergara I mentioned cost, ~1700 ish.
Yeah, those are the ones I've been looking at most. Then today I got a bonus...
Long range plinking, maybe PRS or something that resembles it. Note that everything mentioned so far has a chassis. No bench or bullseye shooting whatsoever other than for zeroing or load testing.I think that it would be very difficult to recommend a rifle unless you tell what kind of shooting that are you going to do.

Get the least expensive rifle that will fit your needs and the most expensive glass you can afford. Following that advice will give you the best bang for your buck. It's really a shame that so many people spend as much as they can on a rifle and put a cheap azz optic on it. Of course, if you don't already reload, you will want to save enough funds to get into reloading just to maximize the performance of your investment in rifle and scope.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

now why is the tikka so expensive again? does it shoot better than the rpr?Comment

A scope will be separate. I know the common wisdom, but I love to be cheap with scopes. I've been lucky so far. For this one I don't need super clear glass. I'm not hunting with it so game identification doesn't matter, just the plates or rocks or whatever I'll be shooting at. I'll probably get a middle grade Vortex or Primary Arms.
I already have lots of loading gear. I'll need new dies of course, and possibly a comparator and some other precision gadgets. Maybe a new chrono since I think I've shot all of my Chronys up.
What I was asking, though, is why a Tikka or Bergara are worth more than a Savage or Ruger that look to be similar. There sure seems to be plenty of fans of those two on this forum.Comment

These are nice scopes - ProStaff that is; not the Prostate.

nope.. but like OP.. i just saw a little something sweeter in my paycheck today as well.
i've been thinking, which may not be a good thing, is to keep shooting with my rem700 .223 and after i run out of ammo, sell the rifle and use the funds towards a 6.5.Comment

I have no interest in that kind of thing. I can't see where a custom job can deliver anywhere near the value that an off-the-shelf rifle can. A mass manufacturer gets better prices on chassis and actions, which leaves no room for the custom builder to give me a good price. Look at the candidates I listed in the OP - hard to beat those features for the money.Comment
