    308 rifle question

Ok, I will try to keep this short. I am interested in getting a 308 rifle. Most of my friends have Ruger Rpr or the Savage equivalent. I was a Infantryman in the Army over 20 years ago. I don't really understand the new fancy looking rifles. I was in a Scout Platoon, I was NOT a sniper, but we had them in our platoon. They had Remington bolt action rifles, and they seemed to work great.
So I am asking this because I really don't know. I think I would be happy with a Remington 700 in 308. The guys I work with were not in the military and they talk up the expensive, fancy looking rifles, as if I wont do well unless I get one. I agree they look great, and have a lot of added features. But am I wrong in assuming I can shoot just as well with Remington 700, and pay less. I don't get firearms for the looks or added features. My favorite two I own are a Lever action 45-70 and M1 Garande.
    Thank you
    Jay

Nothing wrong with a R700,probably one of the better out of the box rifles for accuracy,at least in my experience.
Lots of aftermarket parts available and many choices of ammo makes it a rifle that should be at or near the top of your list.
      Keep it simple!

Do a bunch of research now. Just look up youtube videos. See what you think you'll want.

You simply cannot go wrong with a Rem700 in .308win. Other rifles I would look into are the Tikka T3 and the Winchester XPR or Mossberg MVP.

Now get ready for all the guys saying the .308 is obsolete and pushing $5000+ tricked out rigs in 6.5 creedmoor with $10,000+ optics. You know because how else are you going to shoot submoa at 2000 yards. Oh yeah and you should only shoot ammo you load yourself, buying and shooting factory ammo is what idiots do.

I've been very happy with this SPS tactical in .308. I put it in a magpul stock so I can use AICS pattern mags. Its got a 10 rounder in this pic.

The chassis stocks were developed for tactical and mall ninja shooters.
When real accuracy counts you won't find a single chassis at the match.
For hunting use they are heavy and for accuracy they are not designed right.
They work well if your standing in a dumpster on one foot or hanging from a helicopter.
In short people like the look so they buy them but when reality finally hits they hurt accuracy.
Stick with what you like and outshoot your buddies.

.308's have been the long range workhorse for years. The new 6.5 rifles are sweet and you definitely get a technological advantage but you can still kick a lot of *** at the match with a .308. The Remy's are ok and not my first choice of action but they are tried and true and paired with a nice barrel and decent stock/trigger you can have a ton of fun and place in the top half at your local match.

If you prefer a traditional stock to a chassis, the Tikka CTR would be a good choice. Unfortunately, looks like the .308 only only comes in 20" barrel. You can get the 6.5 with 24" barrel.

If you don't want to be talked out of .308 then hell yes a rem700 is good to go. In fact it's a great rifle and a great place to start.

If you are just punching paper at "long ranges" then the 6.5 creed will be "easier" in that it's external ballistics are slightly better with a bit less kick. But you didn't ask that so .308 and the good ol Remington 700 is absolutely viable.

An R700 is great, a custom R700 is even greater
