Savage Trophy Hunter $450 otd, worth it?

I want to pick up a bolt 308. Have an M1A so maybe a bolt 308 isn't even worth it.

Dicks Sporting has a savage trophy hunter xp for $499 minus $100 rebate. So after taxes and dros it's $450+

I was also eyeing the Hog Hunter and then a used savage 10 precision carbine for $500.

Looking for some input on these. I also don't have a scope for my M1A yet and also want a lever 45 colt....so maybe I should just pass on the bolt 308 for now ;(

The trophy hunter doesnt have a heavy barrel and wont be as good for target shooting at the range.

I'd rather have a Hog Hunter.

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.

If you want a heavier barrel, Cabela's has the Savage 12 FV. It has a 26" heavy varmint barrel. $319 minus the $100 rebate.

I have know a few people that have hunted with a M1a. It can be done but I would rather have a dedicated hunting rifle.

450 is not a bad price but there are cheaper option and more expensive. It depends what you are looking for. My main deer rifle is an older pre Accu-trigger 110 in 30-06 that I got used a long time ago for almost nothing.

My thinking is hunting rifles need to work and hit what you need to. Not much else.

I recently got one in 7mm08. I've shot 40 rounds though it so far and it shoots pretty good. I'm sure it will shoot better as I shoot more rounds through the barrel.

As mentioned, it's a hunting rifle, not a bench rest rifle or long range gun precision gun. The stock is a little flimsy in the forend. When I was sighting it in I was using a harris bipod and the front of the stock really flexes. Will probably upgrade to a little better stock eventually but for the amount of rifle hunting I do the price was right.

The weight of it is nice too. Hiked around with it all weekend deer hunting and it never bothered me. If hunting is your plan don't get a varmint/heavy barrel, you will regret lugging it around all day.

Yes that much is obvious but the OP mentions also looking at the Hog Hunter and Precision Carbine versions of the model 10. Both have heavy barrels suited for sustained target shooting. I thought it prudent to point out the difference in a hunting rifle. Not everyone is on the same page.
