I own a Remington 700 LTR (Light Tactical Rifle) in .223 with the magpul stock and fluted barrel... I was wondering if shooting 55 to 62 grain 5.56mm orunds would damage the gun in any way..? Thanks.

Remington 700 LTR QUESTION

I wouldnt, not in a normal 223 chamber. The two cartridges are very similar but not the same. Some guys do, but you wont see the best performance your rifle can accomplish shooting AR15 ammo through it anyway. Get some Hornady or Nosler 223 ammo if you dont reload. Black Hills is another good option for a more budget target ammo. -
Primary difference is throat length - 5.56 chambers have a longer throat. Off the shelf Rem's have a really long throat length (well, at least the 308's do. I don't have a Rem 223.) If yours does have a long throat, there shouldn't be much of an issue with shooting 5.56 ammo.
If you're worried about it, give Remington Customer Service a call and see what they say.Comment

Why would Remington say no way on 55-62 grain bullets?Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

You have a shorter throat so you get a little more pressure and thus velocity but that's about it.
If I buy a 223 reamer with zero freebore and I buy a 5.56 reamer with zero freebore what's the differences?Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

The difference is an additional 5k-10k psi.
Will it blow up a 700? Almost certainly not.
Will it put extra undue stress on the bolt? Almost certainly yes.
You can make your own decisions but were it my rifle theres now way Id shoot 5.56 through a normal 223 chamber. Especially if that chamber was a match or tight 223 chamber. But since its a Remington and they cut chambers the size of hallways its probably ok.Comment

I would imagine with all the cheap surplus ammo on the market that more 5.56 has been shot in 223 than 223 in 223.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

In layman's terms a 5.56 with zero freebore would be a 223 with no freebore or the same exact reamer?Lynn Dragoman, Jr.
