Need recommendation for rifle rest

Objective: Fun time at the range (no competition shooting).

I'd like to get rid of the bipod and use a shooting rest but not sure which to use.

I read up on the Caldwell Sled and thought that while it may be good to minimize recoil, it takes away part of the skill hitting the target (it looks like its a 'point-and-pull-the-trigger' rest). ....or am I wrong?

Caldwell has some plastic shooting rests but I figure they may be too light (will be shooting bolt actions in .243 & .270 and an AR in 6.5 Grendel).

I tried a shooting bag and wasn't comfortable with it (I couldn't get the elevation I wanted at Angeles Shooting Range).

Any suggestions based on user experience?

And i use a rear bag. If your shooting at angeles. Just buy a rear bag there. They usually have a good selection.

Shot and sample bags filled with clean, dry sand work for me. Rest the stock, not the barrel.
A shooting bench is a good investment if you don't have a formal range handy.

Go to Grizzly or www.Bullets.com and get a Bald Eagle rest. They where just on sale for $139 a week ago and they will usually honor that price for a month.
The key to shooting very small groups with a front rest is getting a bag that fits your stock without allowing it to wobble around.
Sinclair International carries alot of bags but don't get one if your not sure it will work.
You can have Protektor or Edgewood make one that fits exactly how it should.
Protektor gets about $30 or less and Edgewood run about double that price.
As they are leather you can fill them with heavy sand and shape them by submerging the bag in liquid laundry starch.
Rinse the slime off of the bag and let your stock sit in it for a couple days and it will fit like a glove.

I hunt, so I'm interested in shooting from what I refer to as a "portable rest", like a portable tripod or shooting sticks. I don't get really small groups but the degree of difficulty is somewhere between a bench and off-hand shooting, and it's much more like the conditions I'll see in the field.

I also have access to a range on National Forest Service land where I can set up gongs, bouncing targets, and even spent shotshell cases that I shoot with a .22lr.

My rifles are all bolt action and none of them has ever been fitted with a bipod.

Caldwell upper, my build lower and the height is adjustable via through bolts and wing nuts.
The Caldwell Velcro holds the bag securely in place.

I use a Caldwell Rock and couldn't be happier. It's like $80 on Amazon and come with a rear bag (not pictured)

Bald Eagle rest with Protektor rear bag is a cheap way to have the last rest you will ever need to buy.

But have moved to the Grizzly/Bald Eagle rest. Competition type rest with most of the features at a quarter the price. Select a front nag that fits your rifle, add a good rear bag and you're set.

Honestly, I have a bunch of cordura tubes filled with sand. I stack 'em like Lincoln Logs for the front, and have a smaller,softer one for the rear. In the field it's sticks and slings or a backpack.

I also have a couple of 10 lb bags of rice bagged in burlap with a handle, available in most ethnic grocery stores.
