    Ruger american

I went to my LGS and fondled a few...including the Ranch model in .223...very cool.

I was honestly surprised how such small, light rifle fit me as well as it did. Stock was very comfy, and the recoil pad seemed like it would make a poodle-shooter round like the .223 feel like a .22.

I also really liked the predator model, but it was no-where as quick and "whippy" as the ranch was.

    Downsides

    -no lefty ranch model
-Magazines felt very chintzy, and more than 5 rounds not at option at this point.
-stock was pretty cheap feeling, buuut the bolt/action seemed very solid and overbuilt in the best Ruger traditions.

I also checked out the American in 6.5 creedmoore. that is a slick little rifle too...

    Just some thoughts.

I've got the American Rifle in .22 LR. Great rifle that you can shoot all day.

My American Predator in 6.5 is a tack driver. Antelope hunt in a few weeks!

I have the ranch. Had to shave the stock where it hits the barrel at the end. Great shooter. Shot 3/4 moa at 100 yards
Friendship is like peeing on yourself: everyone can see it, but only you get the warm feeling that it brings.

Both CDI and PTG make a aics bottom metal for the American short action line of rifles. MDT even makes a chassis and Indian creek has a chassis in the field testing phase.

                I have a stainless .223.
                Like it lots.
The factory trigger was a little heavy.
Adjusted the trigger to the minimum.
                Much better feel now.

I will be picking up my 7.62x39 Ranch on Wednesday. I love compact rifles and this one is just about perfect. If they use that mag system on the 5.56 or .300 BO, then I could see more in my future....

I have a timney trigger on mine and it was well worth the upgrade!

Thanks for All the input. The fact that this has bottom metal available seals the deal for me.

One question: the shop i found one at has one in .223 specifically. (Its marked with .223 remington, not 5.56/.223.

I understand that .223 will fit, but will 5.56 absolutely not? I think its like 357mag(35ag and 38spcl) and 38special(38special only), right?

Next question, is either the 5.56/.223 or .223 only going to be more accurate? I tend to buy .223 but i want to be able to shoot 5.56 if i happen upon it, but will that equal a severe accuracy difference?

Yes you can shoot 556 in it. And the 1:8 twist means it will stabilize heavier bullets.

I'm in the market for a $500-$600 or so bolt action 30-06 for deer hunting and am torn between the Ruger American and the Browning AB3 Hunter. The Browning wins hands down on looks with the walnut stock but the Ruger adjustable trigger and reputation for accuracy has me kinda leaning that way. I've owned a couple of Browning rifles in the past and liked them well enough but there's something about the Ruger that screams "You'd be crazy to not buy this gun!"

May I ask why 30-06? My friend has one and it’s nice. But a 6.5creed Ruger American will do the same job with less recoil. Guys have taken deer out to 650yds with a 6.5 creedmoor Ruger American. If you want something bigger than the 308 parent case, just go with the 300wm Ruger American Magnum. I have one and love it! No reason to go with 30-06 imho.

Ok in the interest of honesty, I today put up a Ruger American 270 with custom Boyd’s stock (one of the few options), mil dot scope etc in the for sale section// I have 2 270s and a Ruger 6.5 for hunting. Just too much.

                              My take: only my opinion:

The bad- Ruger Americans do not have a lot of after market support. The stocks are light but really really bad. This is really only an issue if you might use a Tripod (yes Tripod to get over stuff and really increase the range) or bipod. The magazines are suspect, but I have seen a guy on YouTube who takes them apart and adds more spring tension by simply turning. I have not tried it.

The good- damn they shoot well for a factory lower cost rifle and are light... for target shooting the Predator series might be a bit better as a hybrid target/hunter with the RPR the better choice for target/PRS style shooting.

For hunting- if you don’t want to upgrade- yes hard to pass..

Tripod example with the Ruger American ( the stock plastic stock is way to flexi and shaky to shoot well in this type of setup) 270
