I bought a savage 11 trophy hunter left hand compact in 7mm-08 for him to use and a 111 trophy hunter left hand in 30-06 for me.

I'll work up a 30-06 load for next year. I don't intend to hunt with the 30-06 this year. I'll use a 308 ruger american predator for my mule deer tag. I wanted the 30-06 for elk in the future.

Son passed his hunter's ed course today. We could have hunted without it, but I wanted him to pass first.

Great! Congratulations. My son took it when he was 9, and the instructor thought he was too young. He got 98% on the test, beating most of the other students. He didn't know what the word "intoxicated" meant so he missed that question.

Took son to range to fire his 7mm-08. He did pretty good, but not accurate enough to go hunting. We'll postpone tomorrow's hunting trip a week or so and get some more range time.

I used to have a 7mm-08. Standard load is 140 grains, 7 less than M80 ammo. 7-08 doesn't recoil any less than .308.

We've already settled that argument since he has a 7mm-08. We're using hornady managed recoil loads until I get enough components to load my own for it. I might grab a 6.5 grendel AR upper and see how he settles into that.

I made up two 6.8 SPC AR's for deer and hog.
One for each of us.
Low recoil, stock that grows with him.
The round seems to have a good following for hunting.

We went out last week for a day. Didn't see anything. Was hoping to go tomorrow, but he doesn't want to. I am thinking of building a 6.5 grendel upper for him to shoot in the off-season.
