That's what I did. I've hit out to 300 so far, I'll work my way out further. As long as she hits the plate, its all good in my book.

Pick a nice FFP scope first. You need good glass to reach 1000 yards

Makes a pile of difference. Within the realm of target shooting:
        • How much recoil are you willing to manage?
        • How much reloading are you willing to do?
        • What will be the most common ranges (distance) that you will shoot at?
        • What conditions will you be shooing in? (competition forces conditions, just shooting for fun means you don't go out when it's blowing 16mph)
        • Will you be shooting unknown distances?
        • Will you be shooting for score or for hits?
        • If you are shooting for score what target are you shooting?
        • You may not currently plan on shooting competition but what sort of competition is local to you that you might be interested in? (don't build a rifle you can't bring to the most common local competition, because even if it's only once a year competition is fantastic fun)

All of the above will inform you of a bullet choice, anywhere from a 52gr .22cal bullet up to a 220gr .30cal bullet and beyond.
weg: That device is obsolete now. They replaced it with wizards.
frank: Wait a minute. There are more than one wizard? Is [are?] the wizard calibrated?

1000 is a magic number for a lot of new shooter.

you don't need "high power" caliber to reach 1000 yards target. Get some good ammo or load some good ammo with high BC bullet, you can reach 1000 yards steel plate target with 308, 6.5

you can get a affordable light weight 338lm. if you don't have a good brake + recoil management with the lighter weight 338 rifle, you can't see where you hit.

308 and 7mm along with 270 are standard rounds with good range ability. Decide on a round. Then pick a platform to drive it from...

Not cheap but . . . . and your good to go to

If Frank can do it . . . with some training so can you !

                    A 1,000 yards. US Standard thirty-six inch yards...I see.

Lets say you already have this rifle for free. That's right, free. So are you ready to pony-up a couple grand for a scope, more money for ammo, and how about a measly hundred or two for cleaning supplies? Hmmm.

Don't forget about 30 bucks for gas money and another 25 or so for range fees for just one day on the range. Of course you want a good set of binoculars or spotting scope don't you.

We are all here to learn about stuff and to talk. Don't let the handful of jerks discourage you, 95% of the people on here are really nice and have their poop together.

I am very interested in sniper files and precision shooting as well. I own an M1D Garand (not accurate and semi-auto) and a Mosin PU (not accurate and excessively Russian) rifle but I would like to get a "real" modern bolt gun. I hear the Ruger American is good for a new distance shooter. Can anyone advise me?
                      I have a Savage 10TR, .35-.5 MOA shooter. 7.62NATO.

They're pretty rare, but pretty reasonable if you can find one.
Has about the same shooting characteristics as a Steyr SSG 69. However, you're looking into the .300 Win Mag, .338 Lapua, or .50 cal Barrett range. Hope you have some deep pockets.

I would get a Remington 700P(the police version with 26 inch barrel) in .308

I would get a good scope, and find the ammo combo that the rifle likes. If more improvement is desired, send the rifle to Randall (ar15barrels.com), for some massaging.

I honestly think that would be an awesome package.

                          WARNING: Buzz-Killer.

Way too much of Long Range Rifle Shooting is total, total fantasy.

LRRS is about owning the rifle, owning the related gear, playing dress-up, playing bullet hole measuring engineer, yada yada yada. It is always about some piece of gear, yardage or some other irrelevant issue that marginalizes human skill and courage.

                              "Long range precision" moar better...

Savage is not a 700. Hathcock shot a Winchester 70.

I have one of each, all different designs.
ah, ok...long range precision MOFO. i was just drying to describe the situations on TV where they were used as "sniper-rifles". i guess you can't snipe "evil-steel-torso-men". lol
but good point. now that i tihnk about it..with all the gun control issues, and shooting sprees of recent years, it's best not to add fuel to the fire by using semi-provocative language.
                              thanks for bringing that up.

i read hathcock's "marine sniper" i remember them mentioning win70 and rem700.....i thought i read they were practically the same rifle...
