Looking for info on really old Remington .30-06

This was my grandfather's that I've had for many many years. I last shot it in the 80's. Now my son is super-interested. in it and wants to shoot it.
I said, "how bout I just punch you really hard in the shoulder instead", he didn't buy it.
Couple things, does any know what model this might be?

My concern is the bore looks pitted and nasty . Will try to clean it up with JB paste but I don't know. Any concerns shooting a gun with a pitted bore? We don't really care about accuracy, it's more about shooting great-grandpa's '06. And I doubt he would shoot more than a couple times (if memory serves, it's not a pleasant gun to shoot).
    Thanks for the help.

Remington Model 30, which is a OEM sporterized version of the P17 Enfield. With a good look over, I wouldn't hesitate on shooting it. If the bore doesn't clean up with JB, as a last resort, get some Copper Chore Boy (pot scrubber) and wrap some around a worn bore brush. Oil liberally and run that through the bore a dozen times, patch out. That has cleaned up dark bores for me.

    Luck favors the prepared.

The original battle plan did not survive initial contact with the enemy.

Have a limbsaver recoil pad put on it or if you want get a slip-on type pad such as the limbsaver. Then it will kick less and be more fun to shoot.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Yeah, clean thoroughly, put a good buttpad on it, and have a literal blast.

Straight-bolt .30-06 is God's gift to recoil addicts.

It's the World War 1 Model of 1917 with civilian garb and some changes. Lots of fun, a bit of history. If your son gets tired of it and you don't want it, you can always sell a part of your family's history...

I'd clean it up and keep it, then pass it on to your son. Featureless, not an "assault weapon", deadly in the right hands.

How is that NOT a straight bolt? Does it look curved to you?

That thing looks in good condition though. Would make a great deer rifle.

There are straight pull rifles and rifles with straight bolt handles and the rifle pictured is neither.

I'm ignorant as to the differences, sorry.

A K31 is a straight pull bolt action. That isn't.

Super jealous right now. I have a sporterized 1917 Remington. I've always wanted a 30. That one looks so good I'd hesitate like 2 days before sending it off for bunch of cool stuff. 06 isn't rough, out a good pad on as recommended above and you're good to go.

You're lucky and so is your son. Use it, put some stories on it
