choosing first Bolt Action Rifle

There are 457 Remington 700 ADL listed on gunbroker right now. The brand new 308 with a scope is running around $450.
If you don't like the rifle you can sell it for the same $450 you paid for it.
The 700 has more aftermarket parts available for it than any other rifle.
It is the best bang for the buck of any rifle on the market today.
And if you want to upgrade it and shoot it in any form of bolt action rifle competition it will work.

Well I'm glad u said it's the Camaro and not the mustang of the gun world. Lol jk it's definitely at the top of the list right now, not in a rush so I'm really taking all the advice in and do my do diligence before I jump into anything it's what I did with my handguns and ended up with a FN five seven and Sig p226 Legion SAO lol

Rem 700 in .308, dont over think it.
Also worth considering are the Tikka T3 and Winchester XPR.
I had a Vanguard II in .308. It was a great rifle but I really wanted a Rem 700 so I sold it and got a 700 SPS Tactical 20" in .308. Very happy with it.
I had a Tikka T3 lite in .3006 it was an excellent hunting rifle.
For "cheap" scopes that will get the job done, I have a Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x44 ($150) and a Burris Fullfield E1 3-9x40 ($200). Both about as good as you can get in that price range.Last edited by Tere_Hanges; 08-09-2017, 6:38 PM.CRPA and NRA member.

That price is rediculous. Offer them $350-$400 for the rifle without the scope. Maybe $50 for the scope mount.Any thoughts on this

It would make a great hunting rifle but for target shooting it is going to kick real hard. I had one in .3006 and sold it because I was switching to .308. The recoil was punishing. You only want to shoot it a few times a year to sight it in before hunting season and then once to harvest a deer. Incredibly accurate and smooth out of the box. Very light weight. Perfect for carrying all day and taking ONE shot. The barrel is a work of art but heats up fast and groups spread out quickly after 3 shots. Not a target or bench rifle. But one of the finest hunting rifles available. A purpose built rifle for ultra lightweight hunting.
Check out the Winchester XPR if you want an ultralight rifle with a super smooth action. Very similar to the Tikka. In fact the XPR is the next rifle I'll get since I loved my Tikka but dont want to spend $500-$600 for a new one. I saw the XPR for $480 at my local big box hunting store. The XPR has a really nice trigger, the same as the legendary model 70.

Too high. Probably piss the Tikka fans off but if you're thinking about that might as well get a Remington 783 $310 https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/...SCP+7MM+24+MAT or you could get a Remington 700 ADL $407 https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/...Syn+Scp+3-9x40 If you want to make either one of these nicer get it a Boyds stock about another $129Any thoughts on this

Yeah I'm liking the 700 better and it comes with a scoop but at that price I can upgrade it later

Start in the reloading section here. There are often great deals on used stuff. There is plenty of stuff online about reloading. Some good some bad.
It really depends on what you want to reload. I have a progressive for pistol and .556 stuff and a standard press for the more precision rifle loads.Comment

That's not a good target rifle.Any thoughts on this

Target rifles have heavy barrels and are usually light recoiling so you can shoot a lot of rounds in a session without being beat up by the gun.Randall Rausch

Not that far out of line. New T3 Lites were running around $600 just before the T3X came out after which I bought a closeout .223 for around $450 shipped from Bud's Gun Shop. That price is rediculous. Offer them $350-$400 for the rifle without the scope
My preference is for rifles that don't need aftermarket parts but I use them solely for hunting (and practice for hunting). As Randall points out, whatever rifle you buy for hunting is probably not going to be suitable for competitions if that's your other use and a competition rifle will be too heavy to lug around in the woods.
If you want to hunt, get a hunting rifle, then become proficient shooting it to 200 yards from something other than a bench.
If you want to compete, then get a competition rifle and practice with it.Comment

look for a TC venture in 308 since you're starting out and not sure what you want.. awesome gun for the money. lots of cheap ammo.
my 270 venture is a tack driver....on par with my tikka.
personally, I like the ballistics of 140 grain 270 over 150gr 308 win. sorry to veer off.
As other said tikka is a light weight hunting rifle. and no need for 7 mag.
if you wanted hunting, then yes....Tikka os the best for the money.
I just don't care for remington's. yea they make lots of parts for it but i just don't have any love for them. All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.Comment

The T-3 Lite is an excellent rifle - my two and my two friends' all shoot well under an inch at 100 yards. They are not target rifles, though. That 7mm Mag will kick in a T-3 Lite - one of my T-3s is a .300 Win and it is no fun to shoot off a bench, even with a Limbsaver pad. I would stay away from the bargain guns with the exception of the Ruger American. Get a Rem 700 - it may not be the most accurate out of the box, but there are thousands of after market options.Comment
