What distance do you hope to shoot?
$700 is a very low budget for longrange (beyond 600yards) shooting.
When the Remington model 84204 comes out, that will be your best bet in your budget range.

        Flame suit on.......

I have not been a shooter for a long time, grew up hunting...

But just for killing paper or steel you really don't need big caliber rifles..

You didn't state how far or what your targets are.?

I would look at a Remington or savage in 6 or 6.5mm..both will get you started..

Just remember depending on how far you are shooting your scope will be near your total spending cost alone...

Nope, but they have some 6.5 creedmoor model numbers up on their website now so at least they are in the works...

A friend just rebarreled a model 70 to 6.5c and I am thinking the same unless the 700 comes soon.

Well outside of OP's $700 budget though.

Randal, what do you think about barrel length on those 700s? I read everywhere minimum barrel length for 6.5CM is 24" to achieve minimum best bullet velocity and 22" is slightly under.

I would prefer 26".Hopefully when they finally release an SPS varmint in 6.5 Creedmoor, it will have the 26" heavy barrel of all the other SPS varmint models.

The 22" models are for the short-midrange plinking crowd, but it will still make it to 1000yds far better than a 20" 308.
