Anyone here have any experience with Steyr SSG 69?

A friend of mine has the PI, not sure the scope he has on it, need to check. .308 caliber, he mentioned he's going to sell it this summer, asked if I'm interested.

I like it, looks solid and he said he gets 0.5 MOA with it. However in my research online (I know, I know...), it seems certain parts are prone to cracking or breaking: magazine (plastic), triggerguard, even the stock. Nothing on his is broken, though.

Do any members have any personal experience with the SSG 69 they'd care to share, and help me decide?

    Thanks for any info...

I have a 1982 modal with a factory wood stock. It will stay in my collection until I'm cold. I only use mine for bench rest, so I don't see braking it. Never had a issue with the mags or trigger guard. If your worried about it, order a backup trigger guard.

They're accurate rifles. Used to have a PII. Only issues in the long term is locating magazines and their proprietary scope mounting system. If you anticipate low round count, I suppose it's ok. However, if you plan on doing a lot of shooting, I suggest something newer with easier to find parts and accessories.

I took the Frontsight precision rifle class, and a guy few lanes down from me was shooting a SSG. I had never seen one before so asked him a bunch of questions. Appeared to be a .5-.75 moa on average gun with FGMM. He had no major complaints with it other than the cold bore shot was nearly 2 inches high every time. Claimed it was repeatable and he would adjust for it accordingly.

          Neat looking gun IMO

FWIW, CDNN is still trying to sell off a bunch of new SSGs, so keep that in mind when talking price for a used one.

Thanks everybody for posting such helpful information, I sure appreciate it!

@Mike I also thought about something else, the FN didn't really turn me on but maybe I should give it another look...

...Sako 85 looks ok too, I think...

Was it difficult to find a suitable scope for your PII?

I was considering another BA centerfire in .308 by Sako, but you have to buy their rings and mounts for it...

...I'm a rank noob when it comes to optics.

Once you have the rings, any scope that fits will work. Finding a scope isn't a problem. If you're worried about that part, you could always add a picatinny rail. That will eliminate any worries about finding a set of rings/mounts. Bear in mind that the SSG69 is an older, discontinued line from Steyr. They have newer SSG models. Finding magazines for the SSG69 would be my main concern.

As far as Sako is concerned, I think they make some of the finest rifles available. Certainly an excellent option.

I certainly appreciate the benefit of your expertise, and appreciate much your taking time to post this excellent information.

Regarding the Sako, the only downside I have seen and heard about, ongoing, is that when you cycle the bolt after firing, the spent brass ejects up, and into, the scope turret.

Maybe it's just the Bavarian, but I know of no fix for this (according to my gunsmith)...

                    Thoughts?

I haven't experienced this with any of the Sako rifles. Are you hearing about this across the board on Sako rifles or just specific models?

Before field time closed they had a black SSG 69 p2k on shelf with no scope that was being ignored for other black rifles. Owner sold it to me for a reasonable price. Looked on ebay for a Kahles original style scope and got one from former CEO. His daughter was selling off a closet full of Zeiss, Kales, and Swarovski to fund a trip to Africa. Very reasonable price orig europost with drop comp for 308, she even threw in a hat. Herbert from Steyr hooked me up with serial #ed orig rings for my p2 (fyi they are directional). Also they had mags in stock. Don't get or waste time and money on the 10 rounders. My trigger guard/mag well had small fractures front and back from a possible over tightening of screws (a common issue). This is how I found Herbert. He had me send back the old and in a couple of days I had a free replacement guard. When it was all done, I had a pkg that used to be avail directly from Steyr ( I have an old brochure) at a low investment. Sat pristine in closet for sometime until my girls wanted to shoot it. So we seasoned the barrel with the usual methods and dialed in the scope at the bench. It really likes Norma 168 match. The SSG now sees regular range time for my wife, 9 year daughter ( DAG ammo), and myself. Accuracy with various weights and styles is always touching rounds so the platform is still very much viable. It is my only bolt gun and one I wanted for more than 20 years.
