Question About Hammer-Forged Barrels

I've done some reading about hammer-forged barrels.

I gather that hammer forging forms ONLY the barrel's rifling.

Why don't the mandrels used to form the rifling include an integral chamber-forming section at their rear (make the mandrel longer) so that as the barrel blank is fed into the hammer forge the rifling and chamber are formed in one operation?

Mass produced barrels normally have the rifling and the chamber formed all in one operation.

Hammer forged barrel BLANKS do not get a chamber formed as they are intended for a gunsmith to chamber them.

Randall do you know off hand which barrel blanks are hammer forged ? Just by reading . . . .. . . I can't think of any unless I misunderstood. I have Douglas and PacNor barrels and assumed they were bored and button rifled, but the others. Kreiger, Bartlein, Lilja and so forth. - thanks

In Los Angeles there is Sand Hammer Forged Barrels if they are still in business.

I don't know of any U.S. aftermarket barrel blank manufacturer that is using the hammer forging process. Due to the capital investment involved, hammer forging is generally used for mass production. A hammer forged barrel has a work harden bore which usually lasts longer but also must be stress relieved.

Lothar Walther blanks are forged in Germany, to cover the US market.
I'm not familiar with any other sources of hammer forged blanks.

Douglas, pacnor and lilja are drilled then reamed then button rifled.
Bartlein and Krieger are drilled then reamed then cut rifled.

Reading about barrel manufacturing and the tech/mechine invloed always makes me happy. The barrel is my favorite part of any gun.
