    Marlin 336W Single feed safe?

    Hello all,

Random question: Is it safe for the bolt to single load a 30-30 cartridge into the ejection port and close the bolt to single feed it like a shotgun or could in hurt the extractor or something?

    Thank you all in advance,

Perfectly safe. And something else that's perfectly safe in a lever action with certain restrictions. You can load ONE round with a pointed bullet into the magazine, chamber it, & load another round with a pointed bullet into the magazine. Only TWO. None are touching each other.

I've got the same rifle. I'm just not getting the "why" I guess of your question. Why not use the loading gate and cock the lever? Then just add another round to the gate. That's what I do if I want to carry an extra in the chamber.

It's not for an extra round, I just put a scope on it and will be taking a bunch of different Brands/Loads to the range to see what it likes, so it is just for bench testing where I'm frequently switching ammo.

Probably all the more reason to load via the loading gate. You want to test cycling ability also.

That being said, you'll be fine via your intended method.

It is primarily controlled feed guns that have an issue with cartridges being manually chambered through the loading port.
Let's take the Mauser 98 as an example.

In feeding, the top cartridge in the magazine gets pushed forward to the feedramp where the cartridge tips up and then pops out of the magazine.
As the cartridge case head is against the bolt face for this to happen, the case head slides up the bolt face and the case rim slips under the extractor.
The extractor does NOT need to spring outward to snap over the case rim.
Since that is the way the gun is designed to feed, there is not enough extra flexibility built into the extractor FOR the extractor to snap over the case rim, nor is there much chamfer on the front of the extractor.
Notice how there is almost no chamfer on the front of the extractor to help it snap over a cartridge?

The Marlin 336 extractor is long and skinny (more flexible) and has an angled face SPECIFICALLY to help it snap over the case rim:

The Marlin is a push feed and your extractor snaps over all your rds regardless of how you feed them
