For Savage Predator/Hunter, replacement bottom metal.

    Folks,

Broke the bank, and purchased the Pacific Tool and Gauge magazine system for the Savage short action. With the bottom bolt release. It will take the AICs magazine system mags. Savages magazines stink.
With the PTG system I will have a true 5 round system. Savages system mags only hold 4. This is going onto a Predator/Hunter Model 10 with Accustock. Cannot wait! A2

Yep, those AI mags designed for the 700 sure are great mags.

PTG was not sure about fit.

      Folks,

I spoke with PTG, they were not sure if their product would fit. So I cancelled my order. I called Savage, and ordered a hinged floor plate assy. $161 total. Still four rounds, but no magazine. A2

It's normal to need to inlet the stock and shorten the pillars when installing aftermarket bottom metal in most stocks.

          Hey Randal,

Thanks for your insight as always. Why Savage does not make either a flush detachable magazine or a floor plate system that holds 5 rounds has always perplexed me. With the floor plate system it will still be 4 rounds, but no magazines to dick with. A2

It would require a longer magazine box which would require changing the size of the stock.
Ruger 77's are the same way.
There was much discussion when Bill Ruger was designing the 77's stock.
He wanted it trim/slim and that meant going with only a 4 round box magazine.

The marketing dept of the competition is always quick to point out the "shortcomings" of the competition while ignoring their own.
A 5 round magazine makes the stock bulkier in the hand which may be more of a factor for the hunting crowd that spend more time carrying than they do shooting.
If you make your first shot count, what difference does it make if you only have 3 or 4 more rounds left in the magazine while you hike over to your game?

My Remington 788 holds 3 rounds in the magazine, but the magazine sticks out of the bottom of the stock because it's single stack.

I have a Savage Lightweight Hunter in 6.5CM that I bought specially for weight and one of the few 6.5CM rifles at the time, magazine system sucks. I would love to replace it, if possible but with all the rifles available in 6.5CM today, its better to buy a better rifle. AICS 5 rounder would be sweet.
