$129 Scope on a $900 rifle,why?

Second on the range books, and charts. Always have them in my range cart. The max distance I plan to shoot any critter is 400 yards. I might try a yote at 500. A2

elevation is critical, and gravity come-ups are a lot easier to dial in than wind.

I run a nikon pro staff on my 300mag only used it once but very happy with it i would like a very high end like a us optics and can get a good deal on one but dont shoot enough to get one for now.

I guess in my imagination I hope to take a Elk with this round. I will never get to Africa, and some of my favorite programs like Tracks Across Africa, Hunters Moon. The hunters carry doubles with round nose solids, or Mauser style rifles with round nose lead, or solid bullets. And I guess it is a way for an old man to pretend that he his a big game hunter.
Although it is not a .375 H&H, or a .416 Rigby, but a little 6.5 Creedmoor. Sounds weird, but that's why I like the 160gr Hornady round nose. A2

That sounds a little light for elk. They are a lot bigger and tougher out of state than in California. Might be okay if you keep your shots at 200 yards or less. I had planned an elk hunt with a .308 and I wasn't going to take a shot over 200.

My general rule of thumb is $1/yard for optics minimum. That said, I have 20 year old bushnell trophy on my .300WM and it works well out to 600. So, you might get lucky.

That's why I never buy my scopes on sale or from big box stores, I don't want to artificially limit my range just to save a few bucks or to get free shipping!

I have a Savage Predator/Hunter in 6.5 Creedmoor. I have looked at several scope options from low end to high end. What I was looking for was versatility, a bdc reticle, and a scope that I came with a good ballistics program. So I chose the Nikon 3x9x40 BuckMaster II.
The spot on program is incredible, flexible, and ultimately covers many of the loads I use. The glass is very good, I like the reticle, the controls are easy, it is light weight. It had all the right characteristics for a good hunting scope. I plan to shoot no farther than 500 yards for coyote, and max 400 yards for deer.
I use a range of bullets from 95gr Lehigh Defense to 160grn Hornady Round nose. The round nose for out of state hunting, eventually. I have had the Redfields, I also have Leupolds on my AR rifles. But this little scope packs a whallop in the bang for buck catagory. A2

As to scopes, I'll add this: Take a look at Burris FF II 2x7 or 3x9 "Ballistic Plex". It has the hash marks, not circles. Easier on target lining up.
And use that 160gr Hornady RN if you want. My hunting friends were pretty amazed when I dropped a mulie at just over 200 yards with a 154gr Hornady RN in my 7x57. They hit HARD and penatrate. But, check that Burris. About $200.00. Good luck.

IS he looking or already got the Nikon?
If looking I'd go a different route than a Nikon bdc. It works but further you get, the harder it is.
I ended up gettting vx2 3-9 with cds dial and I feel much more confident at 400 than holding a big circle on imaginary center.

Well Elk are their own Category
You have a huge animal but it has 2 big weaknesses.
1. Thin Skin a .22-250 will go completely through a elk.
2. Huge Lungs and heart

However the Elk has
Incredible Endurance and Speed

I have put a .68 ball through a elk's shoulder and had it pass through his rear quarter. The animal got up and ran a 100 yards.

Then I have witnessed a 80yr old woman shoot a elk with a .250 Savage. The animal fell right down and died where she shot it.

Then in 1989 my dad missed his first shot. 2nd shot hit the elk as it started to run up hill towards the tree line. The animal mysteriously turned and ran down hill towards us. It ran right passed us continuing down the path we walked up. The elk died inches from the tailgate of the truck. Easiest haul out of all time.

You never know what is going to happen with elk.

Elk are not bullet proof. But if you don't hit the vitals..... you are F...ed. Extremely tuff animals.

I have a couple of the P series Nikons - and they work. Vortex Diamondbacks are good too.
