6.5 CM vs. 6.5 GAP vs. 260 Rem

Hello. I've got a Kimber Advanced Tactical 308 with a ton of work done. A few hundred rounds fired. It's been my deer rifle for the last couple years. It's just too damn heavy. I am looking into a custom build. Looking for lightweight and mid to long range capabilities. While planning on a custom build, I would be open to factory rifles in the same caliber.

As far as use goes I'll throw this out- I've got a deer lease in South Texas and I like the challenge of picking off a doe long range. There's spots where I'd easily be able to get off a clear shot out to 750+ yards. I've taken doe's out to 400 or so with no problems. Shots on trophy bucks will be >175 yards. Our feeders sit between 85-110 yards from our stands. My 9 year old son took his first buck last season at about 120 with my 308. Will plan on using it for other hunts as well. Ca Mule deer etc.

Ammo cost/availability is not too big of a deal. May only put 25 ish rounds a year through the rifle. I've got good glass. Just curious as to what some of you guys would suggest.

Those will do the same thing. I'm doing a 260 Ackley because I load my own and I have tons of brass I can make it from. More bang for da buck!

If you got a 308, a 260 sounds better. Much easier to make brass. However, the easiest ammo to find is the 6.5cm.


Ps: what's the difference betweens trophy buck and a doe? Both buck and doe earn our ethical shots.

I agree and don't want/need ethics lessons. I mention that because it takes a lot more knockdown power to drop a 170 lb 12 pt Buck than it does to knock down a 90 lb doe. Also ethically/practically/honestly- I would not chance never seeing a 190+ class buck again because I did not drop him at 4-5-600+ yards. I'd take a shot on a doe at that though. Our ranch is Biologist managed and if I recall correctly we were issued 74 (iirc) doe tags last year. Not that that's what we could shoot. That's what game management professionals/biologist recommend we shoot to properly maintain populations.

That's what you are likely calling the 6.5 Gap.

It's a 6.5 SAUM.

Since you will shoot so few rounds, I would go with a magnum like the SAUM...

im going the 260 route after speaking to GAP and the fact that i have a few 308 rifles and will be loading.

I built a 260 on an AR10 platform, and like it a lot. I now want to put together a bolt action 260 to match.

Great round, very versatile, nice flat trajectory and plenty of stopping power.

I'm with Randall - 6.5 SAUM 4S is exactly what you want.

If you reload, .260. If you want factory, 6.5CM. I did way too much research on this before settling on .260 for my AI. Been very happy so far and if you ever just want some factory stuff check out Prime ammunition.
