    First "zero" spread group...

I was stoked to see this spread. I did not realize this until after the 3 shots were taken. I am seeing consistent 5-7 ES with this load and barrel and with only 84 rounds down the tube, it is ready to go. The three shots are on the sighter target with the Magneto. I then took it off and shot a 3-shot group without it. Just a slight POI shift.

284 Shehane chambering in my F-Open gun
    32" Brux 1:9 twist
    180gr Hybrids
Wolf Primers - don't hate on Wolf...these are the best primers I have ever used. Super consistent spreads and not a single issue with them.
    H4831SC

Now I just need a match to shoot it in...This also happens to be the same load in my other barrel. It is nice when you have the same load for two different barrels. Makes loading easy.

We are holding a Father's day match this Sunday and we start at 2054 yards.
With a load that tight you will be ringing the gong like the dinner bell on the ponderosa.

And is there a change in the round policy ?

I thought only NATO rounds where allowed at Camp Pendleton at the moment . . . .

I got a 338 edge with 300gr OTMs for your type of shooting. Admittedly, I have not taken it past 1,000 yards.

I got to save these 284 Shehane barrels for the CA State LR and Berger SWN. I've been getting great barrels AND I have a good lot# of bullets. I've been seeing great vertical lately.

huh. I saw you at Metcalf the other day. Or your rifle, anyways. Had a brownells mirage shade on the barrel with stickers on it. I think you were gone before the steels area got slammed with crowds. I had a couple new shooters with me, we were just coming down off the 200 yard range and you were already setup on the line at 100.

How are you liking 7mm shehane as a cartridge? Don't think I can give up 6mm, but if I do, I have always preferred 7mm to any alternative caliber. Don't know why. (I know why. My first rifle is a 7x57)

Yes, that was me. I am usually in and out of there. I don't shoot too many rounds at 100 yards. Just enough for some initial load development and to get 100 yard groups.

I try to keep as minimal amount of rounds down the barrel and save them for matches.

I really like the 7 Shehane. I've been shooting it for over 2 years now and have a good feel for it it reacts in wind, recoil, etc. Plus, I own my own reamer and every barrel from that reamer seems to shoot the same load well from beginning to end.

Funny you mentioned the 6mm. I have a 6 Dasher and have sort of come to the conclusion that shooting the 284 Shehane for all F-Class matches, even in 600 yard matches, is the way to go. The 284s just dominated at the 600 yard at the Berger SWN and I do not see that changing. The Dasher might be more accurate and easier to shoot, but to "hope" for the wind to not blow on the day of the match is foolish and the 7mm just outclass the 6 Dasher in the wind. The 284 guns are also shooting so well nowadays that IMO, the only way for a Dasher to win consistently is for the wind to not blow.

yeah, I do get windblown like crazy.

Can I get away with my short action (Ruger)? or do I really need a long action for it? And if so, are there wildcat versions made for SA, like the 6xc is to 243?

With the freebore I have, you can use a short action, but cannot mag feed. If you need to eject a loaded round, you will need to most likely pull the bolt and eject from the rear.

My loaded round is ~ 3.24" long.

well that's a no go then. RPR needs the bolt forward to open the stock to pull the bolt. I found out the hard way fixing a jam is not so easy when someone tried to feed the wrong ctg into my ruger.

Anything truly short enough, like an even shorter 284? I wonder if a clever enterprising gunsmith could shortstroke a 284 or shehane and cut the bottom off the sizing dies?

would your OAL be longer with 195's?

edit: NM, did my own work. .872 nose lenght, I'd need a case no longer than 2" to make that work. Maybe I just need to stick with 6mm.

Yea, the 6.5 creedmoor, from what I can remember is 1.96" overall length with the 140s. Probably a no-go in 7mm, unless you want to shoot a 7mm-08 and use maybe 162s or something.

Actually, I just saw that the 7mm SAUM is 2.0x OAL. I wonder now if the RPR bolt can be opened up to the SAUM rim size. That should allow SA users to run 180's or even the 195's.

Not sure what kind of velocity is possible compared to a 284 or 284 variant. Your case is alot longer than 2.0x".

Hrm, looks like maybe a no-go.

Near the bottom, someone already looked at this.

Kinda dismisses the theory that the magneto speed will make your groups go to hell, doesn't it.
