i want to get a rifle built. Rem 700 .243 need gunsmith

hey everybody I live in the san diego area and don't know where to go to get a rifle built.

I want to build a new varmint hunting and just pure fun shootin rig. most likely a remington 700 in .243, do I go buy a rifle just for the action and take it to a smith and have em go through it and put a barrel on it or is there other better options getting a aftermarket action?

I don't need a competition rifle, I just want something that's accurate thru out the normal bullet weights. not trying to shoot 1000+ yards.

so what I guess my question is does anybody know a shop/gunsmith that does quality work in the socal area?

    what I have invisioned is a 700 .243 22" heavy varmint barrel with nice trigger in a b-c or h-s stock with a leupold vx6 3-18.

    any help appreciated, thanks.

OP, I don't know about the SD area, but if you want to drive to Van Nuys, AR15barrel (Randall), he'd be the best smith I have had. He is on this forum too and there are so many people use it, I know some people drove from up North to him before to have their rifle work on . His work is top notch and there are many member here can vouch for it

By the requirements in the OP you don't need a custom build. Unless maybe you really, really need a Remington 700. There are a number of Savages, Weatherby Vanguards, etc that will do the job. You can add a fancy stock and trigger but they're not needed to make the gun shoot.

        Hi, nice first post...

Personally I would start with a factory Rem 700 in 243 and go from there...The SPS Varmint or one of their SPS Stainless variants would be nice.

Both of mine out of the box with the right ammo are excellent shooting rifles... That leaves you with some budget for the stock/trigger/scope.

You can always get another barrel put on down the road along with a visit to the gunsmith for whatever work you want done, but there is nothing having that done right out of the gate either, it's just going to cost you more money.

If you are wanting to go that route, I would buy a blueprinted action from PTG before buying a factory rifle and modifying it.

All depends on your budget, expectations, and all that good stuff...

Are you going to be buying factory ammo off the shelf, or do you already hand load? You are going to be wanting to do the latter if you want to take advantage of a custom rifle if you go that route.

Just get a Tikka or CZ Varmint and be done with it.

Get a 700 action from GrabaGun and have a competent gunsmith put an aftermarket barrel on it for you in 243.
I would go with a fast twist barrel so you can shoot all bullet weights very accurately.

Just buy 700 SPS Varmint and shoot it. When you get to the point where you need a match barrel you will know exactly what you want and don't want in a rifle. Then you can have the action re-worked, buy the barrel, trigger and stock that will work for you without guessing.

Contact AR15barrels. No doubt he can build a nice 700.

Try the criterion barrels first to see if you are happy with the accuracy you want. You will be surprised the human factor dominates
