    Winchester 670 (.30-06) Feed Mechanism

I should have asked this particular question a long time ago. My .30-06 is an early 1970's model Winchester 670 (poor man's Model 70), purchased for the princely sum of $100 in 1984. It's taken a deer, a caribou and four varieties of African plains game. Seems to shoot better with time, though that might be the shooter finally being able to shoot as well as the gun.

This model has a blind magazine and push feed. The first and third rounds have a tendency to get tangled up when I try to chamber them. If I can remember to do it, light finger pressure on the cartridge keeps everything working smoothly, but it's one more thing to remember when there's a critter in the scope.

Does anyone know whether this problem is common in certain rifles and if so, what might be done to fix it?

First thing to check is the magazine spring. Bend both mag spring legs to form a capitol "W" compared to a pigeon toe spring. The follower should travel in the mag box fairly level, and not dive either front or rear. Could be other cause, but this is the first place to look.
