Lapped rings vs. ring quality

What's more important, ring quality or having the rings lapped?

I'm in a pickle with the Tikka T3 Hunter in .30-06 picked up for my birthday. It comes with factory Tikka rings that they all come with. I've used them on my 6.5x55 in the same rifle for about a year with no problems. However, they haven't been used all that hard and the 6.5x55 is a much softer shooting cartridge than the .30-06.

I'm wondering if I spend the money to get a lapping kit or get a set of Talley rings. What would you do?

Talley or DNZ would be good choices. Ive never had a need to lap a good set of rings/base.

They supposedly improved the newer rings.

Neither are more important than alignment.
If the base is flat and the rings align properly and the rings are straight/perpendicular/square, no lapping will be needed.
Lapping will simply SHOW YOU if the parts were square.

You can have the highest quality/straight/square rings and have a crooked base and they will still need lapping to align correctly.

I lapped my 6.5X55, 308win and 7-08 Tikka rings and they have had many, many rounds thru them with no trouble.
Come over to the valley and you can use my stuff and lap them and any others you want. I have 30mm and 1" kits.

Get a set of Burris Signature rings with nylon inserts. No lapping necessary, won't scratch your scope.

For a stress free scope you can bed the rings.
This eliminates everything but the alignment and nothing mentioned here fixes bad alignment.

I bought Talleys for my t3x (.270 win) after hearing about them from a freind of mine. Super secure, no lapping needed. Congrats on your new Tikka

I lapped my 2 piece talleys on my tikka, and they were 99% perfect. I say if you have your stuff out, lap it.
I would think the one piece rings such as dnz would be even better for not lapping.

It is better to know, than to guess. That is why I lap ALL my rings - even one piece units.

I line both the bases and caps with a ~150 deg. arc of black 3M vinyl electrical tape and then trim the overhang with a razor blade.

Snug the caps on the scope and wait a day, and then torque. The vinyl will extrude and leave a perfect bed for the scope.
