URSA 2054 Yard Match March 19TH

It looks like the weather is finally going to cooperate and we can hold a match this Sunday.
This match will also allow those that haven't qualified yet to pre-qualify for the upcoming 3K match in SoCal.
I will hang the gong Saturday night late so we can go hot at first light sighting in and the official match will start at 8 AM sharp.
For those that have been suffering through all the rain delays this match will cure you.
To shoot you will need a properly filled out release form and I will have those with me.
Eye and ear protection are mandatory!!!
No pit duty and no fees to shoot.
Tell everyone you know.

Directions.
Take 101 North past Ukiah and make a right on highway 20. Go to the town of Upper Lake and make a left onto Mendenhall road. Make a left onto Elk Mountain Road and turn right onto Clovis Lane. Take the only left up the mountain to the top of the mountain approximately 30 minutes or 8 miles.
When you get to the top take a left at the only road sign and drive 3 miles until you see all the trucks and shooters. My truck is currently half red and half black but should be all black by next Sunday.

Huntington somehow had my die order canceled for the 338imp when I called them last week. Been about 4 months now. Might be a few more. I'm scrambling to find something to shoot but it's not looking good at this point.

I might take you up on that. Are you planning on shooting the gun I just built you? What time Monday do you plan on being at the shop?

Yes the gun you have. I am putting it in the black/white McMillan 50 HBR stock so I only need to open up the barrel channel and throw a scope on it.
You said 2-5 pm so 2 is what I am shooting for no pun intended.
Don't let me talk too much and I should get home in time for dinner.

If it rains we can shoot any Sunday from now on that is dry and we get 4-5 shooters or more.
I bought a Destroyer action from Pacific Tool and it appears to be a Stiller Tac-408 clone.
I am ready to shoot and get as many shooters qualified for the 3k match as we can.

That mallet is a really funny story.
It got banned in Sacramento around 2004 as being a safety concern.
I knocked the bolt handle off of one of Bruce Thoms BAT actions with it and he wouldn't return the bolt until I told him how I had managed to do it. I wasn't claiming it as a warranty issue and fully admitted it was my fault and I was paying but no bolt until he heard how I did it.
And most importantly it came from Clifford "Skip" Talbot.
I was at a FCSA fifty caliber match in Reno and Skip was shooting his Cyborg rifle at about 160 pounds. For those that don't know Skip is a very small Shooter who always had 20 pounds of keys hanging from his hip.
He would slide his bolt forward then smack the handle down with the mallet.
After firing he would lift the handle until it reaches the opening cam then pop it with the mallet.
The McBros 50 BMG action is massive but it has a very tiny bolt handle and offers very little mechanical advantage.
Now that Skip is no longer with us I cherish that mallet.

Skip sounds like on heck of a guy. I wish I could have met him and picked his brain sometime.

The mallet makes a strange kind of sense, and not just from a leverage aspect.

If you're setting a bullet right out to the lands and can close the bolt by hand but it's hard, a mallet would give you a more consistent bolt close than doing it by hand and be less likely to move your rifle/equipment in the process.

To clarify, the bolt would always close the same amount by hand or by mallet, it would just be a more consistent getting to that point in terms of speed and power. I'll have to experiment with that.

This last batch was my first attempt loading SMK 300gr bullets right to the lands (I usually go for a decent jump) and the results were very promising. Vertical dispersion seemed to diminish and I was up to 92 grains of H1000 powder with zero pressure signs. Brass life looks like it should be good too.

I just sized and trimmed 100 pieces of Lapua brass for the competition. I'll clean them tonight and load them tomorrow. I'll be shooting 300gr SMKs this match, maybe next one I'll work up a load for those Berger 300gr I've got sitting gathering dust.
