    Howa 1500 223

I'm currently looking into getting a 223 bolt gun. I've seen some previously owned Howa 1500 for sale. Any opinions on Howa rifles?? The rifle would be just used to shoot at the range and keep ammo cost down. Any opinions would be helpful. Thanks all

The Howa 1500/Weatherby Vanguard is an excellent rifle.

Get the one with a heavy barrel. They are fun to shoot.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

The Howa .223 is an excellent shooter. I wasn't aware mine was a 1 in 12 twist, took me a while to find out. I understand there is a 1 in 9 twist, not sure which model. I had to find ammo that would stabilize, finally found that 40g Fiocchi works excellent. No changes to the rifle but the stock.

                Here's the rifle:

Here's the grouping of 15 rounds - one flyer.

My son-in-law has a bull barrel one and it shoot fine. It will not shoot the 50gr Barnes VG bullets due to slow twist. Looks like a shot gun pattern. The 36gr ones shoot excellent as does the Hornady 55gr SX and SP bullets.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

They were 1-12 for a long time, but I believe all .223 models were changed over to a 1-9 twist a few years ago. Chances are any new H1500 .223 that you see on the dealer shelves will be 1-9 twist. I'm assuming that Legacy Sports will have knowledge of a serial number cut-off for the change, and a guy could always call them to find out. I believe that the same information holds true for the Weatherby Vanguard.

Very interesting. I bought it off the shelf at Turners about a year and a half ago. They might have had a large inventory and took a while to get them sold.

I'm all good with it, it is an excellent shooter.
