The picture above is my 98 Mauser test rig. The barrel is a 30 inch Hart max heavy varmint taper. The trigger is a 6 ounce Kepplinger set trigger and it is sitting in a stepped barrel block of my own design. Sunny Hill bolt shroud.
I am shooting 190 Sierra MatchKings at 2850 fps for best accuracy and have pushed them over 2950 fps with RE22 and Lapua brass. Shoots 3/8 inch 5 shot groups in a hunting type stock.

      Nice! That's pretty quick for a 190.

If I use lot # 25083 RE22 the powder that was blowing up all the 7 mm magnums 12 years ago I can hit 3000 fps but best accuracy is at 2850 fps so I stick with it.
63 grains is all you can get in Lapua 30-06 brass and seat a bullet.
The pictures show the lot# you want if you have a 30-06.

Nice looking rifle and good shooting, OP.

My Mauser is at Pac-nor getting a 6.5x55 target weight barrel put on and seeing your results with a shot out barrel has me excited!

You are going to sporterize a German Mauser?
Just sell it to a collector for a bunch of money and buy a modern rifle.

I completely understand your concern, but this thing never came into the family as a collector. It had a funky sporter stock that had been cut up to mount this behemoth clamp on scope mount and the rear sight had already been removed. And then there is Mr. Frosty:

It would be nice to replace the barrel, but I just can't justify the cost. Sure the barrels can be had for cheap, but having a smith do the install kills it for me. This thing is going to turn out just fine for what I do since the furthest range I shoot at is 200 yards, plus it will be a good hunter if I don't make it too "luggy".

Thanks Flouncer. From what I have read on some Mauser forums, they have a very good rep. If I was in the market for a barrel I would probably go with something like this: https://www.gunpartscorp.com/ad/1162210.htm. But again, dropping $300 - $500 on a rebarrel is not in the cards. Besides, if I can get a 1"ish group out of this thing with a peep and a skinny a*s front blade, I just have to see what it will do with a scope.

I have two of these barrels and a third on the way in 6.5 X 55 for my new build. They are worth the $480 to $500 per. You get what you pay for They are high end barrels

How comfortable is the stock? Does it make it a whole lot heavier? I've been considering getting one for my .308Win Mauser.

Those Archangel stocks look gross as hell. Why not get a B&C or Boyds or something instead.
