    Help on final decision

I have had a few financial set backs that have cut into my planned play funds. I still want to get myself a 308 now and not wait and have what I have left dwindle away.

I am wanting this for range fun, and some hog and maybe deer hunting. Figure I just need good in the 100-200 yard range.

I had decided on the Savage Trophy Hunter XP at $530 and was pretty confident in the included scope to be good enough for a year or so.

I am now thinking about the Remington 783 in the $300 range. Will the included scope be "good enough" in the given range for now?

The Remington 700 ADL comes in a package for $460 and has a $75 Mail-In Rebate that would get me to not much more than the 783. Also includes a scope that I don't know if it would fit that "good enough" category.

Would one of the other 2 options do well or should I just find a way to spend the extra and get the Trophy Hunter? Found that answer, have to buy an approved lock.

Thanks for your thoughts. Also, please no get this used stuff. I would not be able to look over a used and know if the price were right.

Extra question that does not really belong here, but I do not own a safe. Will that cause me any issues when I purchase?

Are you able to answer the question in regards to the scope? Do you own, and how accurate have you found it?

Some seem to be happy with package scopes, some not. No one can say whether one will work for you. If you're used to nicer scopes I suspect you will find them unacceptable. If not you may like them just fine.

Savage. End of problem. If for hunting change scope to a Leupold or buy the rifle only and buy the Leupold 3X9X40 duplex reticle or a 3.5X10X40. If buying rifle with the scope it will work for range use and later can be used on another range toy.

Before I would buy the Rem I would get a Ruger American----Oh wait I did that when I wanted to replace my 30-06 bolt action. I have shot a number of them and all have been very accurate.

I've never used a scope, so I don't know any better. Basically, I know I'll be upgrading the scope, down the road, but that'll take several months of saving for. Just like to know if they are good enough for the short term to take down a hog or two and possibly a deer if I can't upgrade before next season

                    Help on final decision

Any of the basic package deals should be fine for what you are looking to do. 100-200 yards is not a great distance and any of the bargain scopes "should" be fine for your application.

I say "should" because my buddy bought a Howa package with a scope in 300wm and by the third shot the scope was busted.

If your intent is to upgrade the scope when your funds allow then I would not worry about the scope included in the package deal. If you were planning to keep the package scope then I would be more concerned with its quality

If you have not been spoiled by good glass (a high end scope) then I doubt you could even tell much of a difference in any of the basic scopes that are included

Sounds like I should be ok for the short term getting the 783 and enjoy the savings. Upgrade the optics down the road and then if I outgrow the gun, I can update that in a couple years and just give the 783 to one of my kids.

No issues not having a safe. They will sell you a cheap lock if Remington didn't already put one in the box. But sense you mentioned kids, just be sure to store it safely. Not just a good idea but the law too.

Both my kids love shooting as much as I do. They already have their own 20ga and .22s. They are 16 and 14 and do a great job of following all safety rules. But, everything is always safely kept in that regard. And they know that if they ever do anything they are not supposed to they will lose their shooting privileges.

                            Finally got cell signal back!

Ok I bought a 783 for step daughter she had it for awhile. Later we where able to trade it and some cash for a Lady Savage 7mm-08.

I shot it several times. Impressed with accuracy. Disgusted with cheap stock. Keep in mind they are cheap at this price. Disgusted with cheap scope. They are all cheap at this price point. Did it function yeah. It functioned above expectation.

The scope apparently is a Weaver Kaspa. Just minus the Weaver Emblems and Kaspa Name. This puts it 2 to 1 1/2 rungs up from the bottom in Scope Quality. Barely adequate to go hunting with.

Now what sold me. After extensive handling and bolt working several entry rifles at the gun store. The 783 and the Tikka seemed the only ones ready to go out and go shooting. All the others seemed to require a little fixing. The Tikka was a little to pricey.

But the next year Mossberg put out the Patriot with Vortex Scope. Have you looked at this offering?

You can get the Remington 700 ADL right now at Dicks for $399 after mail in rebate.
It comes with a 3x9 scope that will work just fine for you and the down the road upgrades are unlimited.
If you end up not liking the rifle you can sell the action for $400 and keep the scope barrel and stock as souvenirs.
