For those interested, I wanted to give an after action report on the match. The match was held this past week. There were 125 shots for record, shot over a 3 day period: A Palma Course of Fire (COF), which is 15 shots at 800, 900 and 1,000 yards. Unlimited sighters at 800 and only 2 sighters at 900 and 1,000. Sat and Sun each had (2) 20-shot strings and unlimited sighters on each string.
I'll focus mainly on F-Open since that is what I shoot. There were a total of 134 shooters in F-Open.

Day 1 Palma had light/no wind(s) and made for relatively easy conditions and the scores showed it. The target used has a 5" X-ring and 10" 10 ring. @ 800 yards, I had ~1/2 minute on the gun and never left the X-Ring for a 150-15X
There were also (2) 150-14X for the day. @ 900 yards I had about ~1 minute on the gun for wind and had a good relay with a clean and 10X. At 1K, I stumbled and dropped 3 points. The winds were up a bit more at 1K, but still manageable. How do I know? Well, there were 4 perfect scores for the day in Open.
and the field was stacked at the top with the top 30 shooters being essentially within 3 points of the top shooters for the day.
Day 2 was the same type of conditions as Day 1 and I was able to clean my first relay with 13X (200-13X), my first clean @ 1K. Relay 2 was a bit tougher and I also had a self-inflicted 8 on the relay as well. Shot 1 through 12, I had dropped 3 points when the flags and mirage switched. Myself and the shooters to my left and right stopped, having seen the condition switch and for ~6 minutes, we sat around watching for the conditions to come back. I had 7 shots left and the shooter on my right had 5 left. The shooter on my left had about 4 shots. When the closer flags and mirage started to switch back, The shooter on the left decided to shoot. Myself and the other shooter waited since the back flags closest to the targets were still pointing the other way. His target came up a 9. He made a correction and shot another one out into the 9 ring on the same side. He made another correction and finished with (2) 10's. When the back flags started to turn and the mirage and ALL the flags agreed, I became the guinea pig and aimed 1.5 MOA left on the rings and popped a 10. I made a small correction and started to shoot and the other shooter also started shooting. He cleaned the rest of his relay with 10's and X's. Me on the other hand, on shot 15, I had pulled the trigger and the target came up a 8
. What the hell
I pointed my crosshair at the center and realized instead of holding out the 1.5 MOA, I had went back to center
Conditions looked the same and I went back to my normal hold and finished with 10s and Xs....I finished with a 195-3X
Day 3 (Final Day) and the weather had changed significantly. The flags were nearly pointing upwards, so the day was going to be interesting. I was relay #2, so I had the chance to watch relay #1 and how their shots reacted to the flags. As my partner was scoring for was shooting, I noticed the back left flag had some significant angle changes and when that flag changed, it affected the shots quite a bit. She dropped 6 for the relay. When I got up to shoot, I put 3 minutes of wind on the gun and during my sighter period, chose a flag angle that appeared to give me the most stable shots and tried to shoot in the flag angle. I also noticed that the speed remained fairly constant so all I had to watch for mainly was angle changes from what I could tell. When I saw the flags changed throughout my string, I made some vertical and wind hold changes and sometimes chased the wind as it moved from side-to-side. I ended the relay with a 197-10X. Relay #2 had even more wind. I put on an extra 1.5 minutes on the gun and did the same thing, waiting for the angle changes and the flag I wanted. If you did not stay on top of the angle changes, you were easily blown into the 8 ring. I finished the relay with a 196-8X.
I finished the match dropping 15 points for the grand agg and shot a 1235-63X. I had just over 50% of my shots in the X ring and was stoked about that. I ended up T28 for overall. My gun was a hammer. I lost maybe 4-5 shots to vertical that may have still been condition related and the rest were waterline 9's. Maybe I should spin this barrel off and not use it until next year..
Congrats to David Gosnell in F-Open. He only dropped 3 points the ENTIRE match on our tiny targets. Also congrats to John Whidden in Sling, who only dropped 2 points and Donald Erpenbach for F T/R, who shot a proper high master score in T/R, something incredibly rare and hard to do and only a handful of guys have done it.
Until then....
