A kit like this makes for a good start, It's a great, solid press that you'll never outgrow. Even if you eventually go progressive, there will always be things you want a solid single stage for.

Is single stage quality better - the tools and the finished product - than progressive or is it just cheaper? What is the advantage?

I think you also need to factor in the cost of made to order ammo for precision shooting, also.

Single stage makes the process slower so you can get everything perfect.
Progressive makes the process faster, but you give up the ability to see that everything is perfect.

          Each has it's uses.
Use a progressive press for "blasting" ammo or pistol ammo where there is less stuff to be checking or be concerned about.
Use a single stage for match quality ammo where you want everything perfect.

You need a beam scale a cup to hold your powder and a spoon to add it to the scale.
Your thumb and forefinger are your powder trickler so no matter what you read here NEVER by a powder trickler.
You need a single stage press and dies. A funnel and loading block and your ready to reload for alot less than $300.
After your sub 3/8 inch get a Sinclair International catalog and buy most everything they sell.
Progressive presses work well when absolute accuracy is not your main concern.
Nobody in Benchrest uses a progressive anything.

              .

              Why? Honestly.

I have and still use an older beam balance before they were mexican made that has been tuned up by Scott Parker in addition to others.

As far as digital Balances go, I've learned to deal with air currents, electrical noise, calibration etc.. But find you still need to spend $$ and get a good scientific balance if you're expecting Kernel repeatability.

BTW I've drop two, one Sartorious and one of the scales picture below (that doesn't use a classic problematic strain gauge - so ya, no need to school me on the thousands of $ lost LOL..

Anyway here is my prefered balance setup. I am using a Omega two speed trickler that seems really fast.. Loads seem to repeat to the kern at any point i reweigh them.. The windshield can stay on with the trickler.

Again, honestly curious why this is bad.. 1 Large Kernel of H1000

The kit I linked above includes a scale and powder measure, $250. I use a measure to throw about a half grain short, then trickle in the rest. Saves a lot of time vs spooning in every charge.
