considering this Remington 700 ADL long range

    just up from Dicks

ADL long range, $399 after $75 rebate, not sure exactly which model it is.

I have been considering a 700 308 for a while. Was thinking about getting a bit higher end one with wood stock. but this price looks pretty good.

this may be the only one I get this year... debating whether to wait for a bit higher end one, and also whether have 308 or 3006...

Save your money and get the 5R. Very worth the cash. Mine is one of my most accurate rifles, even more than some custom rifles I have.

My wife thinks I only have 3 guns

      Yes. This ^^^^

I wonder where Remington imports this 700 ADL long range Rifle from?

No on the 30-06. Not common, way to much recoil an expensive compared to
      .308. Just my opinion.

Personally not a fan of the top loading blind magazine either. A BDL will empty from the opening floor plate and also you can remove the floor plate and install a 10 round removable magazine kit from Magpul or other manufactures.

Thinking long term I am a believer in the buy once, cry once concept. If you're only going to HUNT and not upgrade then sure, the 700 ADL long range .308
      will work.

If your end game is a nice synthetic stock with a 10 round removable mag kit, a
really effective long range scope (with rings) and perhaps an upgraded trigger
for punching 3/4 inch groups then buy a Remington 5R and shoot it stock or glam it up (weight goes up as well).

Either way, for my Cry Once Money and sticking with an off the shelf Remington the 5R would be my first choice.

      Just my opinion.

Might be okay to use just to shoot out the barrel and down the line change to Chassis, new barrel, etc.

folks , many thanks for your input. i appreciate all of it.

"buy once, cry once" is definitely the right thing to do, specially for the long run. my plan was(well, still is) to get a 5r ($1000- $1500) + $500 scope, and cry once for that. the thing is i donot have the $2k yet.

now this price is tempting and i can afford it now. a bit background of my current
situation and skilll level: the range i usually go only has 100yr and i am hoping to get into 300 yr level in two years and eventually 600 yr. so i am thinking an entry level 700 is sufficient for a couple years. i probably can resell it with the same price when ready to upgrade. does this make sense? please DO beat me up as this purchase may ruin my change to buy 5r at year end(wife won't allow)

btw, is .223 a stupid idea here? 308 will add another caliber in my collection . i am just into reload and setup for 223

thanks for the input. i am new on 700. sorry for the basic question.
                    1) if change barrel and chassis, the only thing left is the action(i.e. bolt group) , right? maybe get a new one would be easy and (maybe) cheaper.
                    2) the action will work for different caliber, 223, 308, 3006 ? will a gun smith needed to rebarrel?

                    thanks

Yes a gunsmith will be needed.

There are basically two specs for 700s. Short and Long action. Short will work for calibers like 223, 308, 6.5CM. Long action for 300WM, 30-06, 6.5x55 etc.

Yea basically if you buy the ADL down the line you can install a chassis and new barrel whenever. Keep the receiver and bolt.

if i get 308 ADL now and later switch to a 308 5r barrel , i won't need a gunsmith, right? if not the case , i may go to 223 as it is sufficient for me now and no need to add another caliber yet

You will need a gunsmith to change the barrel.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

OP I get your thought process but along with the "buy once cry once" advise I would say not to spend good money after spending bad money. Now I'm not saying the ADL is a bad buy but ultimately you would be better served putting that money aside and saving it up to do it the way you really want.

Sounds like he's pretty green and wouldn't really know what he wants anyways.
